Dinner for breakfast

Curious really, I love 'normal food' for breakfast.

This morning I've had cous cous then a banana. Yesterday left over tabbouleh plus a few olives. Sometimes it's a ham or cheese one slice sandwich. Other days I fancy a pitta bread with tuna.

OH thinks I'm strange to eat these foods in the morning. I don't mind toast or weetabix once a week at a push. But sugary, sweet breakfasts don't do it for me at all.

If I'm not overweight and fit and healthy does it matter what I eat? Does anyone else prefer the unconventional breakfast? If so, what are your favourites?

Dc always have leftovers from dinner for breakfast. Or fried eggs if there aren’t any.

Full english breakfast is savoury too, so don’t see the difference.

In Japan noodle soup is standard for bfast.

I like leftover pasta bake for breakfast.

I find breakfast foods boring and like a big breakfast so I often eat a normal meal or leftovers.

Today I had blue cheese and gooseberry jam on toast which was a bit breakfasty I suppose.

I'm very upside down too. I often have porridge for my evening meal.

After years of choking down sugary sawdust because it is "proper breakfast food", I made a decision a few years ago to never eat cereal again. I'm with PPs - love a continental-type breakfast with some combination of cheese, eggs, bread, tomatoes, cucumber, deli meat. But I'm also a fan of just eating what I fancy, regardless of what time of day it is. Had pasta in a spicy tomato sauce for breakfast at the weekend, much to DH's horror.

I do love spice at breakfasttime so a bit of curry would be perfect and if we've had some the night before (homemade or takeaway), I'll often keep a portion back for the next day's breakfast. I also really like things like shasuka and huevos rancheros which are obviously common breakfast foods elsewhere - and I tend to turn up the chilli heat.

We used to go to a fabulous Malaysian restaurant, sadly closed down now, which served roti canai as a starter with an amazing coconutty, peanutty, spicy curry sauce. The menu said it was a popular breakfast dish but they were offering it as a starter to an evening meal to suit British palates. I would happily live on that every single morning if I could.

I love breakfast for dinner - but really don't do that often enough.

Favourite breakfast is Japanese - rice, pickles, fried egg, soup and some fish or veg.

Curry in India for breakfast - masala dosa - OMG

Love smoked fish, olives, cheeses and fancy bread.

Breakfast burrito..

Welsh Rarebit.

But probably not spag bol or cottage pie....

Though anything left over fried with an egg on top and some tomatoes probably equals a great breakfast.

I don't think it's weird at all. I never eat cereal other than as a snack sometimes and toast with jam would fill me for about 5 minutes.

My breakfast is usually a bagel with bacon and brie, avocado on toast or eggs of some form or another. Sometimes I have cheese on toast and some fruit. We regularly have a continental cheese, meats, fruit type breakfast at the weekend. In the past year or so DD has stopped eating cereal and generally eats much the same as I do.

I visited Japan years ago for work and loved the noodles, fish and miso breakfast.

It's all just food at the end of the day. Mr Kelloggs has a lot to answer for.

DS had rice and frankfurters the other day for breakfast at his Filipino grandparents house. He loved it!

I quite like left over veggie Indian takeaway for breakfast. Usually though I just have coffee/toast/cereal/fruit, I couldn't eat scrambled eggs or beans at 7.30am

Chinese people have congee for breakfast sometimes, it's a porridge made of rice and you add whatever you want as toppings, so ginger, spring onions, prawns, meat...I believe they sell congee in KFC in some s.e.asian countries.

My cousin in law was staying at my house and had a toasted ham and nutella sandwich for breakfast.

My chinese MIL sometimes makes me a soup for breakfast which has got chicken thigh meat, lots of fresh ginger, black fungus and brandy. Thats amazing!!

My country's traditional breakfast consists of rice and soup, baked fish and veg. I have no problem eating anything for breakfast.
My dh(english) became similar over the years, happily eating left over curry or spag bolog for breakfast. My mixed race ds is the same.

I'm sceptical and really think a lot of supposed 'breakfast foods' are designed to not fill us up for long and so we eat more of them. Sugary cereals etc. Toast and jam and breakfast bars,I'm slim but I'd be never satisfied on those. I'm not one to beleive its 'the most important meal of the day' either . Pure marketing scheme. I'll eat food when I'm hungry, when my body tells me I need it,thanks

Yep, on holiday in Turkey once we had salady bits, this soft square white cheese and crusty bread, it was delicious. Plus in Goa, very common to eat a sort of mild veggie curry in a thin bread like a pancake.
One of DD’s favourite breakfasts is a ham, cheese and tomatoes on top of English muffins.

I like grated tomato and olive oil on toasted baguette. We have when we visit PILs in Spain.

turning it around a little, breakfast seems to be the only meal where people are happy to eat the same thing, day in day out.

I had congee, mentioned above, in the YMCA in Kowloon. It had chunks of chicken in it too. I think that’s the only breakfast I’ve ever had which slightly disconcerted me.

OP, you are so right. My favourite breakfasts include:

roast veg with a gorgeous creamy sauce made by zapping cashews with tahini, lemon juice, ginger, garlic, seasoning and a little warm water.

Spinach and frozen sardines cooked with lemon.

Raw veg salad with a tuna pate dip

Haloumi and squash chunky pieces roasted together with harissa

Left over puy lentils cooked slowly with a heap of tasty veggies and smoked paprika

So many yummy ideas
I love bread, cheese and olives for breakfast, huevos rancheros or the spanish tomato bread @MinnieMountain mentioned. I could eat noodle soup or leftover pizza...but I don't think I'd eat shepheds pie.
@rorosemary couscous doesn't grow, its a pasta but it's made of grain as much as any cereal I suppose!

My dh is horrified by all of this. He eats anything at other times of day but is hilariously conservative about what you can eat for breakfast. It’s either porridge, conventional cooked English, toast and marmalade or honey, cereal. Nothing else could possibly be eaten before 1pm.

Me def. I just have my left over dinner from the night before. Could be anything, fish pie, beetroot pasta.

I genuinely can't believe the shite the UK and USA give their kids for breakfast. Those sugary cereals? Why not just give them a mars bar and be done with it!!!

My teenagers make their own breakfast, one has bananas on toast or porridge with honey and the other has a full english followed by a pot of full fat natural yogurt and banana every morning! They roll my eyes when I eat my dinner for breakfast.

Though to be honest they roll their eyes when I breathe, move, sleep ....

Sounds very healthy and fine to me. If you enjoy it go for it! Personally I can only stomach porridge and coffee for breakfast and can't imagine eating olives or tabbouleh but everyone is different.

I think those who think of cereal as 'traditional' are getting this wrong. Cereal is a relatively modern invention.

Surely more traditional breakfasts are things like sausages and bacon etc, or eggs on toast, or kippers.
