Removing sticky label residue from plastic boxes - tips please!

I've been given half a dozen strong plastic crate type boxes, perfect for my crafting bits, but they all have really sticky residue from previous labels (see pic). Hot soapy water doesn't shift it. Any tips please?

Wd40 - gets rid of it every time.

Cooking oil.

Nail varnish remover

SWnewstart · 22/09/2020 20:11

Brilliant - I will try all three suggestions. Hopefully one will work!

The solution to everything: Alcohol.

Where I work we discovered that alcohol hand sanitiser removes sticky stuff such as sellotape residue, and permanent pen ink from white boards.

I use IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol) applied with a cotton bud.
It's clear and completely evaporates away not leaving a residue.
I got mine via Ebay.

Sticky Stuff Remover. You can get it at Lakeland, and no doubt other places too. It's good stuff.

'Elbow Grease', comes in a squirty bottle with a yellow label.

Lighter fuel

I'll second Sticky Stuff Remover. Does what it says!

This - it’s brilliant stuff.

Don’t use nail varnish remover or any similar solvent as it may partially dissolve the plastic underneath the sticker.

I always use baby wipes and they tend to work quite well :).

Furniture polish, spray on and leave for about a minute then rub off

Another vote for sticky stuff remover. Is excellent.

Baking powder mixed with cooking oil to a paste, smear on and leave for a few hours then scrape off shouldn't harm plastic. It works on glass but hey I'm bored, Elbow Grease the product is good although some advice sound a bit harsh for food containers

WD40 did the trick! I'm too impatient to either go to nearest Lakeland or order products online, so it had to be something readily to hand at home. Anyway, I now have 6 lovely clean boxes for my crafting bits & pieces Smile

Glad to hear it worked! I like it for exactly the reason you've said - don't need to buy anything special, you can use what's already in the toolbox!

Also glass cleaner, I used Method.
