DD has a cough

TinaTraybake · 21/09/2020 21:44

My DD woke up last Wednesday with a sore throat and cough. I kept her off school for that day and then by Thursday she was much worse and spent all day in bed complaining that it hurt to open her mouth. On friday it wasn't much better and I had an appointment with a doctor over the phone who said it sounded like a viral throat infection and to keep her off school for a couple of days rest until it got better. He asked about coughs and temperature and diarrhoea and she had none of them until friday night she had a bad stomach ache and diarrhoea, no temperature or cough and she slept properly after that. We still don't know why that was. Fast forward to now, she has a cough and keeps coughing up phlegm, she also has asthma and this is usually how a cold ends for her. She can now open her mouth, speak, eat, swallow as normal but she has a pretty bad cough and asthma and I don't think it would be right to send her into school with a cough during these times of covid. Do I keep the rest of her siblings off school just because she is ill or should she just stay at home until she is better?

The rest of my kids are all fine, it's just her who is ill at the moment. Normally if it was just a cold she'd be in school with a packet of paracetamol but I just don't think I should send her until she is healthy, although I am worried about her missing out on work.

Sorry, but she has a new continuous cough, so you all need to isolate. Can you book her a test?

Todaythiscouldbe · 21/09/2020 21:51

I never say this and I'm completely against testing for what is clearly a cold/ bug etc but I think she needs a test. Covid can present as diarrhoea in children and she's had or has a cough.
You all need to isolate until she gets a negative result.

We were advised by the doctor not to get a test although, I have been trying to book one for her but I can't.

When you say that you were advised by the doctor not to get a test, wasn't that on Friday, before she had developed the cough?

Todaythiscouldbe · 21/09/2020 21:56

That, presumably, was before the diarrhoea and continuing cough.

TinaTraybake · 21/09/2020 22:01

It was before the cough and diarrhoea, but I've been trying to book a test since that friday night, and she now has no diarrhoea, she's just been sitting on the sofa watching telly whilst coughing up phlegm. I genuinely don't know what to do

You all need to isolate by the sounds of it. It's a new continuous cough.
It's an utter ballache, I know. We're all at home waiting for DC test result after he started with a continuous cough yesterday. It's more than likely due to the cold he started with the day before but there the rules for now so isolation it is!

Todaythiscouldbe · 21/09/2020 22:03

You all need to isolate for 14 days or keep trying for a test and isolate until she gets a negative result.

TinaTraybake · 21/09/2020 22:03

She's obviously been coughing into a tissue, then putting that into the bin and washing her hands.

Ok, do I keep all the kids at home tomorrow?

Yes. You all need to isolate for 14 days or until you get a negative test result.

wegetthejobdone · 21/09/2020 22:05

Book a test! You have to fill in her details and then sit with the webpage open refreshing for a couple of hours until you get a slot for a test centre. It is possible. I found appointments became available local to me just after 10am.

AlexaShutUp · 21/09/2020 22:05

Yes, you all need to isolate, and keep trying to get a test.

Did your other kids go into school today?

TinaTraybake · 21/09/2020 22:10

My eldest son didn't because my daughter and eldest son both go to the same school. Two of my other kids went in to primary school today. I won't be sending them tomorrow. Does anybody know how missing out on school work works? Daughter says she is only being set the homework stuff to do, not the stuff she is missing out on in class.

You need to tell the school(s) you are isolating. They should have plans in place

RealityExistsInTheHumanMind · 21/09/2020 22:14

It's a cough following a viral throat. I'd put money on her test being negative.

But this is mumsnet so you must never go out again

TinaTraybake · 21/09/2020 22:20

@RealityExistsInTheHumanMind
I also think this but I don't want to put anyone else at harm.

I can understand keeping her at home for a day or two more - simply because of people's fear but let her siblings go in. You are not putting anyone at risk.

Even if it is Covid, the quicker we accept it as 'a virus' the sooner we will get over this.

Your last sentence is utter bullshit.

OP I get your frustration - I have a child sent home with their asthma cough today. Had to get tested and while family at home til results come back. I'm a vital frontline key worker and somehow someone is going to have to find someone to cover me, probably repetitively throughout winter.

I hope you have Netflix!
