What helps with period pain?

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 21/09/2020 18:44

Am currently sat in a hot bubble bath and feeling sorry for myself and feeling a bit silly asking this question at 29 years old.

Other than hot water bottles, painkillers, baths and chocolate is there anything else I can do to make this thing get lost Sad.

You have my sympathy OP.

Heard a rumour that brandy can help. Not tried it myself as I can’t stand the stuff.

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 21/09/2020 18:51

I don't think I have even tried brandy but interesting suggesting Grin.

This sounds over dramatic but am actually close to tears and just want to rip my womb out.

Naproxen taken at 2 pills morning and evening with paracetamol in between.

(And in my case zapping of endometriosis and ablation to stop the bleeding)

Drinking lots, and if you get clots, pushing them out Envy not envy Blush

I feel for you as suffered badly myself, just wanted to get out of my body. Only thing that made it bearable was taking paracetamol and ibuprofen full doses at same time. Speak to your doctor and get checked not endometriosis and see if other painkillers. I also found yoga helpfulFlowers

I have been considering phoning the GP for a while now but not sure they will even take me seriously. I'm not even sure if the pain is even bad or worse than it should be because I only have my own experience to go off.

Definitely see a GP and if they don't take it seriously see another Doctor who will. Don't let it get dismissed as "women's troubles".
Everyone experiences pain differently and if it is affecting your life please get it sorted. The second GP I saw was very understanding (a woman) Good luckBiscuit

Codeine .

Out of hours handed me a box of dihydrocodeine last month, I slept like a baby after spending entire day on the floor .

Three days of that, paracetomal, ibuprofen and buscopan ... relief .

Frogshoe · 21/09/2020 19:57

Cocodomol and buscopan

Rumtopf · 21/09/2020 19:58

Buscopan, co-codamol and thc liquid on my tampon. I bless the ground that woman walked on in Vegas when she suggested it. I feel the sensation of the cramp but not the pain. Now for it only to be made legal in the UK. You could try with cbd oil and see how you go?

ktjb39 · 21/09/2020 20:01

You should definitely try Feminax - the one with lysine. I bought it a couple of years ago thinking it couldn't be better than other painkillers but it is brilliant and now I won't be without it.

OliviaBenson · 21/09/2020 20:03

Naproxen- it's in feminax (check for this though as there are different types). Also worth a trip to gp to check for fibroids etc.

Maverick66 · 21/09/2020 20:04

Ask your gp for mefenemic acid works for dad who has polycistic ovaries.

Maverick66 · 21/09/2020 20:05

Obviously that should read daughter NOT dad 🤪

Fruitbowlflowers · 21/09/2020 20:06

Get yourself to the GP, periods shouldn’t be that painful. Came on to suggest yarrow tea but no way would that help for what you’re describing.
I had my endometriosis blasted (can’t think of the actual word) and that’s helped. I really
Notice the impact of my diet in my cramps, if I have eaten loads of crap that month I get bad cramps, but the months where I have managed to eat vaguely healthy then they are less so. But I’d definitely say get some help of your GP.

DeeThree · 21/09/2020 20:07

I have to take pain relief at the first hint of cramp and then alternate paracetamol and ibuprofen every two hours so the pain never takes hold. If I don't take the first pain relief on time it's a losing battle. You have my sympathies OP, hope you're feeling better soon!

The6thQueen · 21/09/2020 20:08

Codiene.
Life saving. I only need it for a couple of days a month, packs last me ages - I normally only renew my prescription every 6 months.
Literally the only thing that stops me doubling over and collapsing.

The6thQueen · 21/09/2020 20:09

And yes, it’s prescribed for period pain. Doctors are getting better at being understanding.

Brockwell · 21/09/2020 20:11

I'm on the progesterone only pill which has stopped my periods entirely. Drawback is a slight loss of libido and weight gain.

Thecazelets · 21/09/2020 20:11

I still get it and I am more than 20 years older than you! Yes to Naproxen, or if you don't have any, alternating paracetamol and ibuprofen every 2 hours, but also yes to going to the doctor for help. It's amazing how much pain we're just expected to put up with as women. Hilary Mantel is a good example of someone who was just dismissed. I think attitudes are changing a bit now, thankfully.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 21/09/2020 20:17

The only thing that helps me is tramadol
I know that's extreme but long time endometriosis sufferer and just about tried everything
Definitely see your gp and make sure you rest as much as possible.

Eckhart · 21/09/2020 20:24

Doctor told me to take 3 ibuprofen every 3 hours from the very first hint of pain until when the pain would normally stop. My pain was bad enough that I've set alarms through the night in order not to miss a dose. It works. Reduces inflammation and reduces the flow.

Before that I used to wash paracetamol down with a double whisky. It also did the trick, but, obviously as a responsible person, I'd never advise anybody to do that... Wink

I hope it eases off soon. You have my sympathy.

waddlemyway · 21/09/2020 20:28

I have something called a Livia. It's basically a mini tens machine. I get period pain in my lower back, you can use it on your front or back. It wasn't cheap, but it has been doing the job every month for a over a year now and has been more than worth it. You need to buy new sticky pads every so often but they last for way longer than the pack says they do. Way healthier than surviving on the high-level and high doses of painkillers for a week of the month that I was taking before. Won't help you tonight I'm afraid but if you are going through this every month then I recommend. (Apparently it's also good for endometriosis but I can't speak from experience.)

JaJaDingDong · 21/09/2020 20:32

Alcohol! It's a muscle relaxant.
