If you were going to buy a car...

What is the most miles it had done, would you consider buying?

My car has to be scrapped so looking to buy a new car. I do about 6,000 miles a year. Some cars are a bargain but have done like 100,000 miles...that's too many miles right?

I've just bought a car and wasn't prepared to look at more than 35,000 Smile I do similar miles to you, maybe slightly more! I tend to find by the time cars get to 60,000+ they get a bit rattly/problematic (which is what happened with my old car! Someone else may come along and dispute that)

JukeBoxHero · 21/09/2020 17:21

Depends on the car. 100,000 is nothing on a diesel engine thats been regularly serviced and maintained. On an petrol that last had an oil change in 2010 and has no history then 100,000 is a disaster waiting to happen.

pineapplepalmtree · 21/09/2020 17:22

I usually would want under 35 ish

Sarahandduck18 · 21/09/2020 17:25

It all depends on the make of car.

If it’s French it won’t last, a good Japanese car will.

SunbathingDragon · 21/09/2020 17:31

It also depends upon the age of the car. A very low mileage in an old car can indicate that it has been sat around not doing anything for lengthy periods which can also cause expensive problems.

Personally, I don't have a fixed figure in my head, to be honest. I buy older cars and I tend to buy on condition rather than mileage. But then I can do some of the maintenance bits myself so I know what I'm looking at to a certain extent. Also, I prefer larger cars, which tend to wear high mileages better.

I was somewhat spoilt by my dad, who had a Lexus that went to over 300,000 miles and is, as far as I know, still going strong somewhere. So big mileages don't unduly frighten me, unless they come along with patchy service history, lots of MOT fails in the past, etc.

I've been looking at miles more than year; i think I'd rather an older car with less miles. There are some really nice, newish cars on autotrader but they have done 70'000ish miles

I would look at 10,000 per year. So if I was looking at a 2017 car I would not want it to have done more than 30-35,000

MikeUniformMike · 21/09/2020 19:30

Make sure it has a full service history. A car with 70K on the clock needs to have had the timing belt changed. Do your research.

Happydaysforever123 · 21/09/2020 19:34

I'd buy a newer car with a higher mileage. I'd look for fsh, with receipts. I'd go for a Toyota in that situation.
Maximum of 50,000.

Rumtopf · 21/09/2020 19:46

Mileage doesn't bother me if it's been serviced properly. I'm more likely to look at the size of the engine, how many previous owners and the mot history.
