Daughter sick in Uni, need some advice please

Thanks in advance for advice. My daughter has just started Uni in Scotland. We are not fromUK so she has no experience of NHS. She hasn't registered with a GP yet. She tested me this am to say she's feeling sick with a headache and pain over her frontal sinus. She also has nasal congestion and her temp is 37.8 3 hours after paracetamol.
To complicate matters further she has a history of significant frontal sinus infection 3 years ago for which she was an inpatient for 5 days on IV antibiotics and had a total of 3 weeks of antibiotics and steroids so the usual advice of keep taking paracetemol and decongestants and rest may not apply and obviously there is also the Covod issue. I don't know what the testing criteria in Scotland are or how to ho about getting tested if she meets them
So a few questions. How can she get assessed to see if she needs antibiotics when she is not registered with a GP yet? and does anyone know if she meets the testing criteria in Scotland and is so how to get tested?
I know she should be sorting this out herself but she's a long way from home and feeling rotton so no judgement please!

@gemandjule
I am please your DD is feeling better. I am not very surprised she has Covid though, when you mentioned the sore throat and high temperature I thought it was definitely possible though not exactly probable. We have had 30 confirmed cases at the university I work at since Monday of last week.

@Oxyiz yes, hopefully it does seem mild. I haven’t actually spoken to her today as I’m just in from work and when I texted her to see if she was up for a call she was just off a contact tracing call which lasted 1 hour 20 minutes and so think she was all talked out 😲 so I’m not sure what support she’s getting. Her flat mates appear to be kind which is good
@bumblingbovine49 30 cases since Monday 😲. I guess the sceptics on this thread may have unwittingly had a point.... looks like COVID is the 2020 freshers cold 😂😢

Yes there’s outbreaks at Aberdeen, Glasgow and Abertay Universities as well.

I thought she has to self isolate for 14 day from the positive test, which was yesterday I think?

Anyway I hope she recovers quickly and completely. Presumably her flat mates will bring food in for her?

And once she is feeling up to it she can watch her online classes and catch up with reading.

I'm not surprised that its positive. Many people are reporting sinus issues.

gemandjule · 23/09/2020 23:55

@S00LA I’m not sure what the guidelines in Scotland are. Here it was recently changed from 14 days to 10 days. She certainly said 10 days to me but her flat mates have to isolate for 2 weeks as close contacts I think

The guidance here used to be 7 days after symptoms start but has been increased to 10 days.

I'm wishing her well, it must be tough and scary having a positive test when you are in a strange country.

ghostmous3 · 24/09/2020 07:52

Wish her well too. I have a daughter who has just started uni and I'm dreading this for her

So to those who said dont waste a test because she doesn't have covid symptoms well that just goes to show that you dont have to have the 3 main symptoms to have it.
That's pretty worrying. How many people are unknowingly spreading the virus because they are told not to have a test unless they have the symptoms and they think oh blocked nose and a headache and a bit shivery..just a cold and its bloody covid.

Northernsoullover · 24/09/2020 08:51

@ghostmous3 its quite shocking how many people don't have ANY of the main 3. I only knew about the sinuses because its how it presented in two of my friends. They are both carers so were being tested weekly.

Flowers for you and your daughter.

@gemandjule

Make sure she contacts her course organiser and personal tutor too - they can offer pastoral support and ensure she has access to the course materials she needs

I’ve just checked and you are right - it’s 10 days for her and 14 days for her flatmates.

I’m sure it’s no consolation to you and her , but there are now thousands of other students isolating in halls in Dundee, Glasgow and Aberdeen and I’m sure that Stirling, Edinburgh and St Andrews will follow in the next few days.

So the uni will have plans in place for everything and she won’t miss out on the start of her course, it will be online or they will arrange catch ups.

Hopefully your DD and all these other young people will make a quick and complete recovery.

Thanks for everyone’s good wishes. Just heard that her resident advisor group have sent her flat a care package with loads of treats and cleaning products. She’s feeling very loved and certain she made the right uni choice despite this setback which is so lovely to hear. 😃

Ah that’s lovely @gemandjule. I’m sure she will have the best time in Edinburgh, it’s a great place to be a student.
