School finishes at 5pm.

Does any have experience of this?

A secondary school we are looking at finishes at 5pm 4 days a week.

Does your DC cope ok with that?

i’d look at another school tbh. I know of colleges and 6th forms that end that late but secondary school can be exhausting at the best of times. 5 is too late

TeenPlusTwenties · 21/09/2020 11:43

Is there homework on top of that, or is it an all in one place method?
Ditto traditional after school clubs.

Whokilledthesucculent · 21/09/2020 11:48

2 days an enrichment activity.
2 days supervised homework.
I'm not 100% sure if that means no other homework. It's a bit of a nightmare trying to find all of the information without being able to physically visit.

I don't think that's an issue, especially if they have supervised prep.
What's the start time and what's the commute?
DS2 currently does 8.10-4.30pm and often does a club after that.

Whokilledthesucculent · 21/09/2020 11:56

Start at 8.20am with a 20 min easy walk.
The next school we're looking at is 8.40-3.15 but involves relying on a not very reliable bus service.

My school was 08:30 - 17:30

It meant we did the majority of our homework at school, mich better than taking it all home.

I would say it depends on length of commit though. I was home by 6

Avebury · 21/09/2020 11:59

Remember that at that moment you have a primary aged child. They will grow up and be perfectly able to cope with a longer day very very fast.

Fredelliottisayfredelliott · 21/09/2020 11:59

Thats a very long day! I wouldn't send my kid there

vanillandhoney · 21/09/2020 12:00

My old school was 8.3am-5.30pm. But no homework on top - you were done with everything by 5.30pm, so your evenings and weekends were your own. It was fine.

Mumblechum0 · 21/09/2020 12:01

Sounds fine for a secondary pupil tbh, they have a ton of homework every day, or mine did anyway, so if they get some of it done before they get home they can relax straight away for a few evenings.

Notcontent · 21/09/2020 12:02

I think it depends on your child.

Is this a state school or a private school? Most private schools have a longer day. My dd finishes at 4 pm three times a week. However, anything later would not work for her as she does some activities outside of school.

Nat6999 · 21/09/2020 12:03

My nieces school doesn't finish until 5.00pm normally, it's a fairly new secondary school, super strict, the ethos is everything is done first time, no questions asked. Parents are told if you don't like how we work, don't send your children here. Detentions are given for everything from not having the right equipment to not paying attention or not producing the quality of work they expect. There isn't any homework, everything is done in school under supervision.

lyralalala · 21/09/2020 12:03

If that means no homework then it's not too bad.

The only thing that would concern me with two days of that and two days of "enrichment activities" would be that it's a very long day for a child who hates school (particularly if you have a child who struggles with their classmates, is bullied or anything like that).

Is there an early finish on the 4th day to balance out the late days?

VanCleefArpels · 21/09/2020 12:06

Normal in independent sector. The kids don’t melt.

listsandbudgets · 21/09/2020 12:07

DD's does this but as an option - or at least it did before bl**ming CV.

They could stay until up to 6pm - supervised homework until 5 and library / time with friends or clubs until 6pm. If they went to homework you couldn't get them until 5 but otherwise we could collect anytime up to 6pm. Some older pupils would choose to stay until 6pm, finish all homework, leave everything in their lockers ready for next day and get the bus home.

DD can't wait for this system to start again :(

Another option is that some schools do an extended school day but have longer holidays.

Clymene · 21/09/2020 12:07

Sounds great to me!

steppemum · 21/09/2020 12:09

I usually don't like th eidea of long school days, but actually, if that is until 5 and then no homework, that is a really good thing.

My kids would all rather arrive home homework free, even if later.

Missing point of thread, but did you just star-out the word blooming 🧐

It's usually saved for fuck or the like. Not blooming 😂 😂

Bloomburger · 21/09/2020 12:13

DS's private school finishes at 5 everyday, 2 days sports, 2 days homework or extra help with revision and exam prep.

He's doing really well, it's good for him to have organised activities in his bubble as his usual clubs are down to the bare bones and the extra homework and exam prep are things we'd have to fit in outside school.

this sounds fab.

Love the idea that it is a choice too.

jay55 · 21/09/2020 12:21

Would they miss out on clubs and activities they already do?

Whokilledthesucculent · 21/09/2020 12:24

Thanks for all of the responses. It's definitely something that needs thinking about.

@Nat6999 I'm wondering if it's the same school...unless it's how a lot of new schools are working.

I think it's 3.45 on the Friday.

AriettyHomily · 21/09/2020 12:26

Is it private? Prep and then sport?

Whokilledthesucculent · 21/09/2020 12:26

I'm also trying to find out if the enrichment curriculum will have to be paid for even though there's no choice involved.
