Which car??

I know there's a MN car section but posting here for more traffic (no pun intended!)

We need a new family car. Limited budget of up to £10K.

I'm really not fussed about shiny features or brand names or even brand new. I just want a decent, reliable used car with plenty of boot space for ferrying kids / shopping / family trips.

So far, models I've looked at include a Nissan Qashqai or a Vauxhall Mokka. We've also had a Ford C-Max before and that was great. So something that size would be ideal.

Which of these would you recommend? Or do you have any other recommendations that match my wish list?

Thanks all! Much obliged...

I'm looking for a new car too. Can't really help on exact models to get, but the garage I've used for years said no Volkswagen as they're not what they used to be, nothing french and anything Japanese is good. This was confirmed by another mechanic who also said Audi aren't as good as they used to be either

I have a Vauxhall Zafira (7 seater) which is great. I replaced my old one last year with a secondhand newer model. My old one lasted me 14 years and was always reliable. The back seats are really spacious for bulky car seats, the boot is huge when the 2 rear seats are down. It's useful to have 2 extra seats for friends should you need them. You can get 2016/17 for £10,000. Mine was an exchanged motability car, they are really well looked after and all the ones we looked at were in brilliant condition.

Lovely, thanks both. Just the info I'm after!

Yeah, I'd heard Japanese cars are pretty reliable hence considering the Qashqai. They're pretty ubiquitous but there's a reason for that!

My friend had an S Max and it was great. Have to say, the C Max was brilliant (well, until it completely died but we had driven it for 100k+ miles and it had more than paid for itself).

I have a Honda CR-V, it's brilliant. Can't fault it at all. The reliability is amazing. FYI Nissan is owned by Renault and doesn't have the reliability that it used to!

FartingInTheFence · 20/09/2020 20:20

Dear God, avoid the French-built Nissan.

They are SHIT.

Toyota RAV4 or Honda CRV would be my picks - bigger, better and more reliable than a Nissan Cumstain.

Had a 17 plate Qashqai, lots of things went wrong, so much so they gave us a 19 plate Qashqai to make up for it. Guess what, things are going wrong.

Would never get another

Kia Sportage. Lots of space, a dream to drive and really cheap to run with low tax and insurance. Family of 2 adults, 2 kids and 2 dogs fit in well with plenty of space to spare! Previously had a qashqia which we also loved and we did look at the newer model but got more for our money with the Kia so went with that and very glad we did. Great car.

bloodywhitecat · 20/09/2020 20:32

The boot space on a Mokka X is crap. If the double buggy is in the back there is no room for the shopping.

AlwaysLatte · 20/09/2020 20:36

A bit over the budget you specified but I can totally recommend the all electric MG ZS EV. Although it's more £ to buy initially its cheap to run, zero tax, lower insurance and we got a 7 year warranty and subsidised pod point charger for the house. I absolutely love it, the best car I've ever had.

AriettyHomily · 20/09/2020 20:39

Zafira. We are on our third now, upgraded recently to a petrol Tourer. Can't fault it. Huge boot, nice driving position.

You should be able to get something fairly decent for £10k.

greenemerald · 20/09/2020 20:39

I have a qashqai and really like it! Not had any problems with it so far. I like the size of it and it feels solid and comfortable.

JontyDoggle37 · 20/09/2020 20:42

Kia Sportage. 7 year warranty that passes to each owner until 7 years old. Massive boot, roomy inside, drives really well, economical on fuel and cheap road tax. I’ve got the 1.6.

Seeline · 20/09/2020 20:43

The QQ boot is very small for the size of car, and the cabin space is not roomy.

pimble · 20/09/2020 21:03

Not a Mokka they have the worst reviews ever

theluckiest · 20/09/2020 21:20

Excellent, thank you all.

Kia Sportage is also on my list so that's v helpful to hear your reviews.
