How to get DD1 (13) a flu vaccine?

historyrocks · 20/09/2020 14:52

DH and I will be getting the flu jab. DD2 (10 years) will be getting it through school. But I can't find a way to get DD1 (13 years) one. The school doesn't do it past 12 years old and none of the chemists around me will do under 18 years. I want all of us done as DH is vulnerable and it seems a bit pointless to not have us all immunised. Any suggestions?

Boots do children - I’ve dd 13 booked in, DH is at the local Boots (5 miles) but I have to take her to the main town centre one which is 12 miles away. If you go on their website it tells you exactly which stores do 12-15yr old vaccinations

Boots here for my 12yo DD

Bakeachocolatecaketoday · 20/09/2020 14:55

Yes... I had this problem 2 years ago and again last year. Basically there is no way whatsoever of getting a flu vaccine for a non-vulnerable teen.

You have to wait until they are old enough for the jab....

Not sure about your logic - if your DD caught a flu virus that’s in the vaccine (through not being vaccinated), your DH wouldn’t catch it from her if he had had the vaccine?

dementedpixie · 20/09/2020 15:03

Some Superdrug stores do it for kids too

HamishDent · 20/09/2020 15:03

DS1 is booked to get it in Boots. This is the first year he doesn’t get the nasal vaccine through school. I don’t usually get it, but am getting it at Boots this year too.

MsKeats · 20/09/2020 15:05

Taking mine to Tesco for one, next Friday.

mocktail · 20/09/2020 15:05

My 12yo is booked in at Boots.

flindorama · 20/09/2020 15:09

I just tried to book one for my 12 and 13 year old DSs with Boots. No-one allowed to book unless they are over 65. All suspended due to demand.

Hazelmazel · 20/09/2020 15:18

Mine are booked in at Tesco because our local boots don't do them. It's a jab rather than a nasal spray though

Flu vaccine doesn't fully protect you. It can reduce the risk of catching flu by 40-60%.

Tons of places do it!

Boots, sainsbury, some chemist's, asda...

Failing that private doctors, we went to London once!

Was about 20 pounds. I've got one every year for younger dc who missed school immunisation program.

Nearlyadoctor · 20/09/2020 15:23

@Bakeachocolatecaketoday - 12 years is old enough for the jab. My Dd 13 is not vulnerable and no problems booking.

Zilla1 · 20/09/2020 15:25

You could speak to your GP practice (nurse rather than receptionist, I'd suggest), explain and ask to be vaccinated when DH is (if he is eligible - I know you said vulnerable but not necessarily the same) or at the end if they have spare vaccine.

Otherwise as PPs have said.

Good luck.

MrsRogerLima · 20/09/2020 15:28

Asda £8

CeeceeBloomingdale · 20/09/2020 15:38

Asda and Tesco's both do. My local Boots normally would but are only doing over 65s due to vaccine shortages this year.

vanillandhoney · 20/09/2020 15:48

Boots.

Chewbecca · 20/09/2020 15:54

Thanks mudcake, I didn’t know that.

Vaccines don't prevent you from getting an infection. They reduce the chances that your immune system won't be able to see a virus off, or reduce the severity of it. But if someone is truly vulnerable, then even a mild infection may be serious. Vaccines don't make people invulnerable.
JellyBabiesSaveLives · 20/09/2020 16:11

Tesco, Asda, boots. You often have to phone to book rather than book online.
Lloyd’s don’t do under-16s
GPs mostly won’t do children who aren’t on their list, even privately

I have one child with an autoimmune condition which their siblings might be genetically susceptible to, and which can be triggered by a bad virus. So 2 technically non-vulnerable children that I’ve always wanted to get flu jabs for. Bloody nightmare till they turned 12 and much easier now they’re 16!

Boots aren't doing any for anyone under 65.l at the moment. Following with interest as I'm trying to book one for my dd13 too.

Just booked for DD13 at Asda as the times were better but Tesco said they would do her too. Asda is £8, Tesco £9.
SocraticJunkieWannabe · 20/09/2020 16:24

Just booked at Tesco!

BashfulClam · 20/09/2020 16:26

Just had my jag at boots and they do teenagers.

jay55 · 20/09/2020 16:26

Boots are only taking bookings for over 65s online.
