Proof of age for Amazon delivery

MrsSchadenfreude · 20/09/2020 10:23

I’ve ordered a case of wine to be delivered to my 87 year old mother tomorrow and Amazon are currently insisting on proof of age. My mother doesn’t drive and doesn’t have a passport, so what should she produce? And are they going to apply a little common sense, or is she not going to get her wine? 😬

I was asked for my proof of age despite being very obviously over 18, the driver was insistent he saw it. It might vary between drivers though.

Does she have an over 65 bus pass?

DinosApple · 20/09/2020 10:33

These are just random things that have popped into my head, however it does seem a bit officious of Amazon to insist. Usually it's a 'if you look under 25 policy', which is fair enough!

Birth certificate?
Marriage certificate?
Post regarding the state pension.
A medical letter showing D of B.

Obviously all these are very personal so I wouldn't be happy if they insisted on seeing proof - but I'd still want the wine!

iklboo · 20/09/2020 10:35

At the minute they're just asking for date of birth (around here anyway). I've not had to provide physical proof since CV19 started.

Zimmer frame?

Mischance · 20/09/2020 10:40

Please do not tell me that was ageist - I know - it was an attempt at humour.

Seriously though - at 87 what delivery man might question if she is under 18? But I guess they have their boxes to tick.

Redcherries · 20/09/2020 11:44

I had to show my id last week, I’m 40, but I do get asked for Id a lot in supermarkets too.

frasersmummy · 20/09/2020 11:49

I am 50 and the amazon driver wouldnt hand it over till I found my driving licence . it was during lockdown hadnt been out for days and couldnt find my purse

I was like you can see I am clearly of age.. no I need to see it.. I held it out to him and he says your finger is covering the last digits of your dob.. like i was 17 trying it on!!

So i would say yes she will need something .. bus pass should do it

FallonsTeaRoom · 20/09/2020 11:50

They'll just ask her date of birth.

lynsey91 · 20/09/2020 12:26

Since lockdown I have had 4 different deliveries of alcohol from Amazon. Three of them insisted on id. The other one just asked my date of birth.

The first time I was asked for proof I laughed as I honestly thought he was joking. I am mid 60's and although I might look a little younger I certainly do not look under 25.

I had to find my passport (I don't have a driving licence) which was upstairs and took several minutes. After that first time I made sure I had my passport to hand the other times

lynsey91 · 20/09/2020 12:29

@FallonsTeaRoom no they may well not. 4 different drivers and 3 insisted on seeing evidence such as passport. Only 1 just asked my date of birth.

The first that asked for proof got quite stroppy when I asked if it was really necessary as my passport was upstairs and meant moving a couple of things to get to it. He said Amazon say they have to see proof

HeeeeyDuggee · 20/09/2020 12:31

I just get asked my date of birth and they record it

FallonsTeaRoom · 20/09/2020 13:04

@lynsey91 well in my experience that's all they've asked for. Why only pick on me as other people on this thread have said the same as me? Hmm

lynsey91 · 20/09/2020 15:25

@FallonsTeaRoom sorry I wasn't picking on you but you stated it as a fact and as it is not a fact I think the OP should be prepared.

I don't know if it varies by area although don't see why it would but, as I said, when I am they almost always want proof.

If Amazon are the ones wanting the proof, and when you order it does tell you that you will have to provide a form of id showing your age, then really all the drivers should be asking for that.

redlockscelt · 20/09/2020 15:28

We get this with Morrisons and Ocado as well so it's not just an Amazon thing.

cologne4711 · 20/09/2020 16:04

I get wine delivered and they leave it round the back of the house if I am not in. I'm not saying who it is, because I don't want a sanctimonious do-gooder complaining about them and making them change their policy.

Roselilly36 · 20/09/2020 16:07

I order an item from Amazon that was age restricted, not alcohol through, asked my son to take in the parcel, he’s 19 & has driving licence, driver just asked him his DOB, didn’t need to see proof. So I am sure it will be fine OP.

MadisonAvenue · 20/09/2020 16:22

I took in a delivery for my son, I didn’t know it was alcohol but the driver insisted on seeing my ID. When I tried to argue that I’m 51 and clearly not under 18 he said that if I didn’t put it back down on the doorstep and show him some photo ID he’d call the police.

I don’t have a driving licence so he then had to wait 10 minutes while I hunted for my passport.

AppleKatie · 20/09/2020 16:27

he said that if I didn’t put it back down on the doorstep and show him some photo ID he’d call the police.

That’s hilarious, I think I would have burst out laughing if he said that to me. It’s their policy and whilst I do show them so they don’t get in trouble with their bosses if they tried that kind of ridiculous hyperbole I’d be tempted to say ‘go a Head’ and shut the door.

The chances of the police attending for this are slim to none.

MrsSchadenfreude · 20/09/2020 17:02

I was asked for driving licence or passport last week. I’ve got an EU ID card and a Polish driving licence - was tempted to show him that as he was quite stroppy. They also refused to leave my gin with my neighbour before. She is 98...

It totally depends on the driver, some just ask your date of birth.

True but the problem is you have no idea what the driver is going to ask for.

I would always have my passport to hand now as more drivers have asked me for proof than haven't. Also, as I said, one got quite stroppy when I queried it

musicposy · 20/09/2020 18:57

Well that’s just burst my bubble; I was feeling pleased at having been asked - though I did think it ridiculous. I ordered some sewing scissors from amazon and was asked for proof of age. I’m in my 50s so I did tell the delivery man it was a very long time since I’d been asked for ID! To be fair to him, he didn’t say “well we ask the 98 year olds too”!

Date of birth was enough, by the way.

Fallowdeerhunter · 20/09/2020 18:59

Amazon have never ever asked me for proof and I get wine all the time

ForTheLoveOfCatFood · 20/09/2020 19:20

I’ve had to show Id and def don’t look young enough to need too but they needed to see it. It’s not the drivers fault it’ll be amazon policies
