5 year olds and bed times

I appreciate all children are different but if you have a 5 year old, what time do you put them to be and roughly how long does it take them to actually go to sleep?

Mine goes up at 7pm at the latest and 9/10 is asleep by 7.30pm if not sooner

DS1 (lark) stories done at 8, asleep 8:02.

DS2 (owl) stories done at 8, asleep...?!

My DD has just turned 5 and also just started school. She wakes up between 6:30 and 7 and goes to sleep between 7:30 and 8, so hits the recommended 11 hours. We start bed time in plenty of time so that she is actually asleep by these times too. Bedtime routine for her starts at 6:45 :)

I take Dd up about 6.50ish and do storytime. She's always asleep by 7.30. I do lie with her until she falls asleep though

Ok thanks. Bit jealous of you who’s children fall asleep so fast! Mine has spent all her life going to sleep with her dad in the room and we’re trying to break the habit. Day one and she went in to bed at 7, she is still awake. Quiet, but awake. So tempting to just cave and go in and hold her hand and know she will drop off quickly but I guess we need to ride it out.

@WhosThatGirl89, yes that’s us normally. She was just getting chattier and more distracted with us in there plus she was more dependent on him putting her to bed, so much so he couldn’t go out in the evening until she was asleep so it’s going to be slow progress but hopefully we will get there without her taking nearly 2 hours to drop off each night. At this rate she will have to be in bed at 5.30 for a 7.30 asleep time! Smile

First 5yo was in bed by 6.30pm every night and asleep by 7pm

Second 5yo around 8.30pm and asleep by 9pm too late probably but I've tried and failed for it to be earlier

Sailingblue · 18/09/2020 20:56

I think there is a body clock element. My 4yo is currently set on 8-8.30 and waking between 7 and 7.30 which works for us. I thought school might have tired her out more but not yet. Annoyingly her sister is more of a lark and is up by 6 whatever we do.

She's goes to bed, as in stories are finished and she is in bed, at about 8. She is rarely asleep before 9, and we still have to sit by her bed until she falls asleep or she won't go to sleep. But she is my non-sleeping wonderchild, and this is an improvement on how she used to be. She is woken up at 7.15am on a school day, on other days she wakes up any time between 6 and 9am. She doesn't always sleep through the night, but this is mostly now the cat waking her up rather than before when she woke up and called us repeatedly for no apparent reason.

Kisforkaylied · 18/09/2020 21:56

Mine have always been good sleepers, luckily. My closer to 6 than 5 year old's current routine is up at 7:30, teeth brushed, pyjamas, story and we are done just before 8. She tends to have a chat to her dolls before going to sleep & she's usually asleep by the time my oldest goes up at 8:30.

We read bedtime stories downstairs then at around 7.45 our 5 and 6 year old go up to bed. I don't know when they actually go to sleep!

KylieKangaroo · 18/09/2020 22:03

4 1/2 year old here, bedtime has always been a struggle. Have to lie with her and it takes about 30 mins for her to stop talking and drift off. I wish she would go to bed on her own but don't know where to start. She also doesn't sleep enough and is always grumpy because of this

My DS will be 5 at the end of the year and started reception beginning of September. He is in bed lights out by 6:30pm most nights! Awake anything between 6-7am really, usually before 6:50am. He has a younger sibling who sometimes wakes him so I'm conscious he needs to be in bed early to compensate for early wake ups.
