Strange ring around bite

I’ve been bitten by some bitey insect

This morning both bites have formed this red ring around the bite

This is the worst one. The other isn’t so bad

They both itch so much.

Is this me having a mild allergic reaction to the bite?

I would be concerned about it being a tick bite. A bullseye rash is a sign of Lyme disease. I would consult a doctor.

SameToo · 18/09/2020 15:10

Might be a horsefly bite. They’re a bastard.

Soubriquet · 18/09/2020 15:11

Is it?

I wouldn’t have thought it was a tick! I’ve not been anywhere to attract them

I have pets but I check them everyday when I fuss them for fleas and ticks

I never knew the thing about lyme disease so perhaps you should get it checked out. What I do know, though, is that I've had bites like that in the past (I always put it down to me having sensitive skin so reacting worse than another person might) and I'm still here so don't panic too much!

QueenOfPain · 18/09/2020 15:13

It just looks like a localised inflammatory response.

The circle around a tick bite is different, it’s a distinct circular border, not an entirely red area. Google “erythema migrans”.

My brother got Lyme disease in central London. It's not just the woods. You can go and get it treated quite easily with antibiotics if it is that--go to a pharmacist and get it assessed if it's not possible to see your doctor.

Soubriquet · 18/09/2020 15:15

Ok thank you

I will have a word with a pharmacist tomorrow

I have that with gnat bits, had two this week. Itching cream and possibly antihistamine for the itch. Whatever you do dont scratch the top off, I have done in past and the infection is awful. Mine sometimes blow up into massive blister bubbles, drs advice dont burst as that opens it up to infection. I'm an expert! 😢

BertiesLanding · 18/09/2020 15:17

That just looks like an inflamed mozzie or horsefly bite. As a PP has said, the rings around a tick bite are just that - a ring, not a solid disc.

CoraPirbright · 18/09/2020 15:18

I had a Lymes related rash around a tick bite. It’s called a bulls eye rash (for non medics obvs 😃) so you can google it but the centre if mine was sort of a weird grey colour with a pronounced red ring. Your pic looks to me like my usual mozzie bite reaction but best to get it checked out.

SameToo · 18/09/2020 15:21

Tick bites are a bulls eye

Wavingwhiledrowning · 18/09/2020 15:22

Looks like a nasty bite and a bit of a reaction. Sadly that sort of thing happens to me all the time!
I've found Anthisan is the best stuff to stop the itching and calm things down. Other 'bite & sting' antihistamine creams don't seem to cut the mustard.

stclair · 18/09/2020 15:24

Tick bites don’t tend to be itchy.

Shellingbynight · 18/09/2020 15:24

I've had a similar type of reaction to horsefly bites, a lot of inflammation and very itchy. It lasts about 48 hours and then subsides. I find an icepack helps a lot with the itching/soreness.

Purpledaisychain · 18/09/2020 15:32

Either a tick bite or a reaction to an insect bite - I'd get it checked. Lyme disease is awful if left untreated. Make sure you know what the symptoms of lyme disease are as well.

Jayaywhynot · 18/09/2020 15:33

Lyme disease looks like bulls eye, dot in the centre of a round defined line, take a antihistamine and see if it goes down, put a bit of savlon or similar on it, if it doesn't look any better phone gp

Purpledaisychain · 18/09/2020 15:33

@stclair Itchiness can be psychological if you know that you have been bit by something.
