Outdoor fridge/freezer... Is my garage outdoors?

I've read some of the stuff about fridge freezers breaking in the cold.

I'm on the south coast (UK) so quite mild.

My garage is part of my house - it is fully attached and within the footprint of the house, has a bedroom on top. It's basically a room which has a garage door and no carpet.

Will it get cold enough to break a fridge freezer?

I've got a temp sensor in there so am gathering data, but it's still warm at the moment and I'm impatient! How cold will it go in the depths of a South Coast winter?

Mine is fine and I live in a cold place.

Is yours a Beko or other special one, or just bog standard fridge freezer which has no business operating in the cold?

Never heard this! Mine has lived in a converted outhouse for the last 6 years and managed to survive the Beast from the East a couple of years ago, which froze the pipes of its stable mate, the washing machine. I'm sure it'll be fine.

Actually the reverse is true.. It can get a bit unhappy when it gets too hot. It starts beeping and I need to press things to sort it out, although never actually affected the function at all.

So much conflicting information!

It will be classified as an unheated room, therefore you need one which can handle temperatures lower than 10 degrees. There's a search filter 'suitable for outbuildings' on Argos, Curry's etc

If your garage is well insulated/properly sealed rather than a flimsy drafy garage door, it might stay above the minimum operating temperature (possibly around 10 C, check the manual, can be found online if you don't have it).

I don't think they instantly break if it gets too cold, more like if it's cold for a prolonged period, so you might be OK most winters. Would there be the option of turning it off if you experience an extended very cold spell, or is this going to be in use full time?

I live in south east, my garage is detached from our house, no insulation, bare cement floor. I've had an old freezer that I got from free cycle YEARS ago in there. Never let me down once. I'd say you are safe

Mine is just big standard.

Ours has lived in an unheated, but integral, garage for years without problems. It can get bloody cold in there, but, tbh, it hasn't yet gone below freezing. It does get cold enough to turn the boiler on via the frost stat though (which is also in there). Have you ever monitored the temp out there?
The only thing we do, when there is an east wind, is put blankets along the bottom of the garage door, which seems to keep the temp up a bit.
I use the garage as a spare 'fridge in the winter. Very useful, especially at Christmas.

My Dad had a couple of freezers in his non attached and unheated garage for years and they were fine so I'm sure yours will be. Once we buy a house with an attached garage we are going to get one for in there for additional freezer space

Palavah · 18/09/2020 16:09

Can you sit it on a couple of layers of old carpet?

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 18/09/2020 16:31

We have an old chest freezer in an uninsulated seperate garage for years, works great. We have a small fridge out there too. Good place to store extra milk and veg.

KatherineofTarragon · 18/09/2020 16:40

Mine is in an outbuilding which is freezing in winter and boiling in summer. Never had an issue. I have a second fridge and chest freezer out there and both still going strong after 14yrs!

Happycow · 18/09/2020 16:55

I have a freezer in our integral garage too... it doesnt get too cold but check the operating limits in the technical spec. Surprisingly few went down to say 5°. BEKO is one that does - had ours year and is fine year-round.
