How much pain should you put up with, realistically, before seeking further medical attention?

I posted yesterday because I wasn't sure if my stomach pain warranted a GP trip or it was just not good enough and I should wait for a nurse to see me...

People told me I wasn't U. So I didn't feel as silly and spoke to a GP over the phone today.

I told him the pain was there for about 5/6 weeks, sometimes better after regular meals to cushion it all, but in the last week it had become almost constant. And a lot worse. I can't describe the pain but it isn't an 'ache'. The pain often comes with waves of nausea but I'm not actually sick. It's as if the pain makes me want to heave.

He told me it's probably that some people are more sensitive to stomach acid so I've now got Lanzoprozol to help. Come back in 4 weeks if still in pain. I was relieved it was a quick fix and happy with this.

However, I've just got a really bad 'bout' of it when I got in and it hurts to even sit here, the thought of running after my toddler feels too too painful. BUT rest doesn't make a difference. Sitting down doesn't help. The pain is the same

It has become so constant and sore Sad When would it be reasonable to ask for another opinion or go back? Would it be too cheeky?

The only description of the pain I can give is that it feels 'raw' Sad

He also laughed that I was just a young girl, why am I having this problem?! Which was reassuring and sounded light hearted at the time, but as I sit here in a LOT of pain I'm no longer smiling Angry

I’d speak to another Gp and get a second opinion. The problem I find the medication is that is masks symptoms and doesn’t get to the bottom.

If your body is in pain or discomfort it’s a signal that something is off, there shouldn’t be a threshold of pain before asking because it’s not the bodies natural state to be in pain.

I would recommend keeping a journal and keep track of everything you consume and also activities doing within the day, to see if you can pinpoint something.

Something isn't right, you definitely need to be investigated.

Have you considered gall stones? I got them after having my 1st baby! It was horrendous! I sometimes couldn't hold him it was too painful! I was told a few times it couldn't be as I was too young! Finally managed to get a scan and had hundreds of the little buggers in there!! Hope you're feeling better soon Smile

Where about in your stomach is it? A raw pain is how I would describe my endometriosis at times.

WatchingWithDisinterest · 18/09/2020 16:19

I would say it's prominently below the rib cage. It is on both sides but more prominently the right side. It's awful

I just got this - again. Mine is gall bladder so no fat until the whip it out. Right side, just under the rib cage and bad about an hour after eating.

WatchingWithDisinterest · 18/09/2020 16:29

Cis Can they remove it for you? Apparently from what I've read it's fine and doesn't impact people digestive wise etc as the bile just drips elsewhere

Yes. They can and will but COVID means I won't even get a scan for 6-8 months and only then would I go on the surgical waiting list.

WatchingWithDisinterest · 18/09/2020 16:46

Cis Really sorry to hear that. It must be horrendous

Thanks but I hope you can get seen and treated. Did they rule out gall bladder?

Gilead · 18/09/2020 20:33

Classic gall stone symptom is feeling as though you’ve been kicked under the ribs by a horse. Tell GP this.

BridgetJonesDaiquiri · 18/09/2020 22:36

Sounds like gallbladder issue to me OP. Push to be referred for a liver/gallbladder scan

WatchingWithDisinterest · 19/09/2020 09:40

Thanks all. Nobody hinted at Gallbladder. I will be saying this Monday. I was about to pass out with pain last night. I very almost rang 999. Then I needed to be sick and brought up pure bile. I felt 10000 times better

Still feeling iffy but no longer in agony
