I just saw an article about rapists being castrated...

And completely astonished myself by thinking "ya know what, I don't disagree".

This is apparently the work of the leader of a Nigerian state, and might be complete bollocks (ha), but I am astonished at my reaction.

I've always had strong opinions, very left wing, anti capital punishment-, anti prisons as they are currently used, through work seen up lots of the issues with mental health and crime etc etc... and while I'd be saying lock them up and throw away the key about rapists, but suddenly, out of nowhere, I'm tired, and..... I don't know.

So, this isn't an AIBU, more a has anyone else had this kind of about face?

Anti- libidinal drugs....yes
Surgical castration...no

Crankley · 18/09/2020 00:17

Not very civilized is it? If I had to make a choice I would go with chemical castration.

lborgia · 18/09/2020 00:20

Oh, I agree that rationally I don’t agree with surgical castration, and, much like capital punishment, there’s always a chance that it may be an innocent man, but it was more about the fact that I’ve suddenly stopped being a “bleeding heart”.

Maybe it’s just a 2020 thing.

Not trying to be crude here but wouldn't they just use other methods to assault their victims?

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 18/09/2020 01:04

A lot of the time rape isn't about sex, it's about power, so I'm not sure if castration would make a difference as such, they will find another way to get that power, in fact if they have been castrated it may make them even more angry.

I am also very against capital punishment, but the odd news story will come up and I wouldn't be bothered if the state made an exception and executed some of the perpetrators. That's based on emotion though, which the law should be free of.

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/09/2020 01:11

Emotionally, yes.

Actually, of course not. Absolutely dreadful from the point of human rights. Also conviction rates would be minuscule because juries with men on them would never convict. It wouldn't actually stop rape. It incentivises killing women you rape because cost/benefit. And it's utterly barbaric. And men would still attack and assault women as PPs have said.

Graphista · 18/09/2020 01:59

Disagree but not for the reasons that might be true for most.

Castration - chemical or surgical - has apparently been shown to not only not work, but to make such creeps angrier and more likely to commit assaults including sexual assaults.

Lock em up n throw away the key I am right behind though!

The Uk has a number of islands that could be used for separating these evil bastards from decent folk.

RosieLemonade · 18/09/2020 06:08

I think it’s a start of a slippery slope with hundreds of unforeseen consequences.

Stompythedinosaur · 18/09/2020 07:40

I dont want to live in a country where medical procedures are considered as an option for punishment.

I dont think it would work anyway - libido isn't the root of most rapes.

corythatwas · 18/09/2020 08:26

Everything MrsTerryPratchett said.

One effect of abolishing hanging was that the conviction rate went up. Juries were happier to convict on the balance of probabilities when they knew a mistake could be rectified. And castration is very emotional (understandably) for men: they just wouldn't want to condemn anyone to that.

In the meantime, men who raped because they hate women would carry on raping.
