My parents want to up sticks and move - if I tell you what they want will you tell me where they should live?

They have lived with the same villagers and neighbours and local gossip all their lives and have recently decided they won't live out their days there and that they want an adventure. Which is amazing, but they're not sure where they want to go.

They are both in their 60s, doing well, both retired. They have a campervan and dogs. Both have creative hobbies outside the home and my dad has to have a garden. They want the sea, or a view of the sea, and places to explore, and peace and quiet, but also people Grin

Currently they live in the South West, have a nice house to sell but it won't fetch megabucks.

We're in the SE and coming near us I don't think will be an option sadly due to house prices.

They're considering Wales or anywhere where they can get a nice place with a garden and room for chickens and dogs near the sea. My siblings and I are all over the country and they have nothing tying them to their village since the last of our grandparents died.

Their plan sounds lovely - but where is this place? Also, where is it not? Worried they'll end up in a seaside town with a gang problem if they're not canny!

Hope I've painted a good picture of the kind of people they are! Any suggestions gratefully received!

My DC are FURIOUS at the plan BTW Grin

Swansea/Mumbles

MrsWooster · 17/09/2020 23:00

Northeast? Mainline to London/SE to see you as they get older /Dgc to see them, beautiful clear seas, access to Scotland and Lakes for Camper van adventures

peakotter · 17/09/2020 23:03

Northeast is better connected to SE than wales is. Choose somewhere on a reasonable train line to most of your siblings. They won’t be able to drive long distances for ever.

MojoJojo71 · 17/09/2020 23:05

Northumberland, absolutely stunning coastline and close to good transport links

Sciencebabe · 17/09/2020 23:16

Isle of Wight
Imagine England (the nice bits) 20yrs ago.
Very friendly. No gangs. No real crime or graffiti to speak of. No high rise buildings/flats. Surrounded by costal walks, caravan areas for weekends at the beach, VERY cheap house prices. Almost a retirement island to be honest, but a really upmarket one. Lol.

Mamimawr · 17/09/2020 23:17

Have they really thought this through? Do they really want to live somewhere new as they get older? It's not easy to get to know people when you don't work or have family around.

IHeartKingThistle · 17/09/2020 23:17

Ooh interesting ideas!

@giantangryrooster

Midsomer County Grin.
Is that the place with all the murders?
Purpleheadgirl · 17/09/2020 23:26

Don't forget though it's not just the area for now if they don't want to move again. Eg Lots of Wales is lovely rural, views and can be cheaper.....but often poorer facilities like local shops or transport or easily an hour to a decent size hospital. Find that lovely area then choose really carefully within it to save problems later.

@JingsMahBucket
Yes, looking for adventures Wink.
