Hi all,
Very boring topic but would really like some opinions before I see the teacher.
I will try and keep it brief.
My child is a very fussy eater. Since 6 months old. Been to the dietician and growth hormone test etc
At school they have to give their choice of hot dinner in the morning. My daughter normally opts for the jacket potato, cheese and beans option. We do talk about what’s on offer every morning.
Now her new teacher is basically choosing what she will eat. Saying the jacket option is boring in front of the class and making them feel bad for choosing it. Today it was chicken curry. My daughter will not eat this and so just had a pudding.

Now I’m all for her trying new foods, and god knows I’ve tried over the last 5 years, but my question is, should I say something to the new teacher? She’s starving when I pick her up as she’s not eating hardly anything in the day.

Yes of course you should say something. It's not for the teacher to decide and none of her business what your daughter wants to pick for lunch. What a cheek. Poor girl going hungry.

That’s terrible - I would speak to the headteacher about what the teacher is doing

Keepyourconversationsboring · 17/09/2020 22:07

Sounds like an awful teacher. And a bully, humiliating children in front of others like that. Beyond cruel.

That is truly awful! Anyone who works so closely with children would know that making a big deal about food is only going to exacerbate any issues with food. Yes she could gently encourage her to try something else but not like that! Letting children feel comfortable around food and giving them their own space and time to try new things is key for a child like this.

ClarencesMum · 17/09/2020 22:09

Thata awful actually, shaming someone for their food choices. I'd be having words.

Baked tattie cheese and beans is a perfectly rounded lunch!

nutty123 · 17/09/2020 22:09

Thank you both. I’m in agreement with you. I’d rather she eat a jacket everyday then starve.
I will talk to the teacher tomorrow. I just didn’t know if I was over reacting

Go in !!

I'm never usually one to say go in but in this case the teacher is right out of order. In so many ways!

Poor DD :(

Laiste · 17/09/2020 22:14

Let us know what happens OP.

My DD is also fussy and when she started full time school i was v.worried about her eating and the teachers were wonderful!

They kept an eye for the first couple of weeks and made sure she was happy and eating, and reported to me how much she'd eaten every day until i'd calmed down about it.

nutty123 · 17/09/2020 22:17

Thank you all.
It’s hard as I’m on my own with her so she normally has to do after school club but tomorrow I will skive work and go in.
I’m not having her starve. She’s only just turned 5!
You’ve all put my mind at rest that I’m not being one of those mums!

I know what you mean. You're definitely not.

I was a TA for 8 years and i know what 'one of those parents' is and you're not one of them :)

WinWinnieTheWay · 17/09/2020 22:19

Teacher is out of line. Jacket Potato for lunch is fine. School meals are hardly made with the best and most wholesome ingredients anyway. Have a word or/and make packed lunches (it's a nuisance but only takes a couple of minutes).

Yes, complain!

It'll change in future anyway. My boys were both very very fussy, as teenagers both now eat curries and are gradually becoming more adventurous with all sorts of foods they'd refused for years. They're still fussy but it's improved a lot.
