Is anyone else's husband ridiculously loud on Teams / Calls?

We are both working from home at present, me in the dining room, him in the living room. Why oh why oh why does he feel the need to bellow on every video / telephone call?

Do his colleagues sit there with the volume turned down I wonder?

Is being obnoxiously loud on calls at work a grounds for divorce?

He's normally quiet, it's like he doesn't understand how microphones work, which is weird, given that he has a PhD in physics!

Does he have headphones with a mic? Might help if not

Gatelodge · 17/09/2020 11:13

Deafening. I have pointed out that the whole point of Zoom is that he doesn't have to project his voice a hundred miles, but to no avail.

WorksTheDinerAllDay · 17/09/2020 11:15

Yes he has headphones and a mic, which is why I don't get it Grin

YES!

He’s Italian do that doesn’t help either - luckily we have 3 floors as I couldn’t stand the noise any longer so he’s moved to the ground floor, I’m at the top and can just about not hear him . Hmm

tryingtocatchthewind · 17/09/2020 11:15

Yes mine!

To be fair he’s always been like that on phones as well. He was clearly born to project his voice!

I’ve had to start working upstairs

Trisolaris · 17/09/2020 11:17

Yes, the only one louder than him is the cat!

Then on my calls I get

‘Does someone have the tv on in the background? (No, that’s dp droning on!)

‘Tri, do you ever feed that cat?’ (I do! Honestly!)

Sad
EsmesRedPetticoat · 17/09/2020 11:17

Yes! I have to mute myself if I’m on a zoom call and DH is also on a call or everyone at my work can hear his meeting! We are in the same room at the minute but as soon as I get a laptop I’m moving downstairs!

WorksTheDinerAllDay · 17/09/2020 11:18

EsmesRedPetticoat yes I have to mute all my calls so they don't hear him droning on about something to do with robots.

DH and I were on the same call on Tuesday in different rooms, doors shut between us. When he was speaking, I got it in stereo.

AriettyHomily · 17/09/2020 11:22

He's not a project manager is he?!?

WorksTheDinerAllDay · 17/09/2020 11:31

AriettyHomily Operations Director so similar but higher up I guess? Is this a project manager trait?

MuseumOfYou · 17/09/2020 11:32

And the keyboard thumping, why does he have to batter the keys like that?!

Thesuzle · 17/09/2020 11:34

It’s a Macho thing. The louder the voice, they think, the bigger their balls

lastqueenofscotland · 17/09/2020 11:48

I’ve got a colleague who is so loud. Whenever we are both on the phone whoever I am on the phone to always comments they can hear her.

Afwan · 17/09/2020 12:18

AriettyHomily DH has same job as yours and like another PP, on the same call as him earlier so heard in stereo.. I can hear him through closed doors and noise cancelling headphones Shock.

I'm assured there is no arguing, just lively, spirited conversation. You have to fight to get your points heard, apparently.

NancyBotwinBloom · 17/09/2020 12:23

Yes mine and he walks round the house and sometimes I want to kill him Wink

Miljea · 17/09/2020 13:26

In the height of summer, DH was working from the spare room facing the window, with that open.

I had to remind DH that all the neighbours didn't necessarily need to hear the finer details of his company's financial position and so forth...

Miljea · 17/09/2020 13:26

He bought a fan!

Witchend · 17/09/2020 14:29

Oh yes! And then he complains if I laugh when he says something that sounds ridiculous. Like "if you do that, then it's going to wipe the harddrive, and take out the application you were working on since the start of lockdown and possibly reset the one you were working on before. That isn't helpful." Grin

My revenge is our supply of soft toys have been protesting for the last week. Around his office they are now all carrying placards saying things like "Wives revolt: No WFH" or "Wives say 'Go back to the office'". They set up a picket line on Monday.

I'm thinking of setting up a support group for women who have husbands wfh. I think it is much needed. Grin

WorksTheDinerAllDay · 17/09/2020 14:47

Witchend

I love your protest! DH is going in once or twice a week to support staff who are in the warehouse but it looks like he'll mostly be working from home throughout the winter. My employer have said we'll be WFH indefinitely so I think I might have to find ways of getting him to turn down the volume.

It's funny because he's never loud otherwise. Only on the phone / video calls.

I've recommended these before but if you have environmental noise like loud family on other calls then think about a noise-cancelling app. There are others but I recommend these (I have no conflict of interest). They work with hundreds of platforms. Free (very limited/and trial versions available but otherwise a cheap-ish subscription.

Look at the various reviews on YT and similar.

No, but another member of my household is. Luckily I seem to be quite good at zoning out noise (I do work that requires very nit-picky concentration but always have the radio or music on, albeit quietly; people who do the same work as me express astonishment that I can still focus).

Yes, the only one louder than him is the cat! That's so funny Grin

EmbarrassedUser · 17/09/2020 16:22

I think I might be your husband Blush DH is always telling me I’m too loud 😂 The weird thing is, I know I’m doing it and I’m normally a really quiet person. However, when you put someone one a screen and make them tiny I suddenly feel I have to shout. Psychology I guess 🤷‍♀️

SimonJT · 17/09/2020 16:25

We’re both fairly quiet speakers, a lady in a flat across the courtyard has a very loud voice, if we both have the window open we can hear her on work calls. She was discussing the best biscuits for a meeting yesterday
