It's true, they are tiny

I remember a thread on here from a loooong time ago, regarding how small weasels are and how people assume they are ferret sized or larger, so I thought I had an idea of their size in my head.

However I witnessed my first weasels today, and they are so teensy, like furry snakes. I was quite surprised.

Now I need to get myself to North America, to see a moose, those things look enormous, height of a house. I thought I was prepared for weasels, I now want to be shocked by a moose.

As you were.

I'd love to see a weasel. Where did you glimpse the beast?

Oldraver · 17/09/2020 09:46

Are polecats as tiny as weasels?

I've seen humming bird moths, not quite the same!

I saw a weasel running across the road in front of my car once, in a rural area.
I was also shocked at how tiny and skinny it was! A bit bigger than a mouse, but not much (and far skinnier).

Meese are massive.

MaidenMotherCrone · 17/09/2020 10:14

Polecats are not the same size as weasels.

There is an old saying about a weasel being able to pass through a wedding ring.

MaidenMotherCrone · 17/09/2020 10:17

Here you go 13 interesting weasel facts 😁

Polecats are quite big (relative to a weasel). You would be very lucky to come across one in the wild.
Weasels are quite bold though. So fast as well!

IamTomHanks · 17/09/2020 10:18

Moose aren't the size of houses, LOL, but they are bigger than horses. They are about camel size. And stupid. And aggressive. I'd rather come across a bear than an angry moose.

rbe78 · 17/09/2020 10:19

I blame Animals of Farthing Wood - Weasel (and Mole) look way bigger in the cartoon than they should be! I was so shocked the first time I saw a mole, I thought they were practically rabbit-sized...

That was good reading! I had cause to research pygmy shrews this week too (the cat keeps bringing them in for me)

I thought I'd spotted a wild otter over the summer, but it was actually a mink. Not quite as exciting, but still a first for me.

I'm now in love with the word 'skrjabingylosis'. Can't wait for my next game of Scrabble.

Not even a small house? A static caravan? Maybe I've overestimated them in the same way I overestimated a weasel...

"A stoat can be easily told from a weasel, by the simple fact that his tail is blacked, and his figure is slightly the bigger"

I've always remembered this rhyme from childhood. It's not any use to this conversation but I thought I'd just put it out there 😁

Straven123 · 17/09/2020 10:34

I have a friend who thought a hedgehog was the size of a pig thanks to illustrated DCs books

IamTomHanks · 17/09/2020 10:37

Not even a small house? A static caravan?

The largest I ever saw was about 7.5 foot at it's full height (tip of the hoof to top of the antler), so they would have to be very small houses and caravans. The antlers are quite impressive and they are broad animals, which may account for why they look bigger.

What's the difference between a stoat and a weasel? One is weasily recognisable and the other is stoatally different...

Lol posted this pic only a few days ago on another thread.
This is a jill ( female) polecat she is just about fully grown here and stood on a few inches of soil in the pot.
The hobs ( male) are generally about a quarter bigger / heavier.

Weasels are much more lithe and athletic looking both are fast movers and gave a simalar gate .

Btw polecats make great pets as long as you can give them the time and attention they need .

It's true, they are tiny

SmileSmile I've had a really shitty morning but that's just given me the biggest giggle!

Shock. I always imagined them being like stoats.
caughtalightsneeze · 17/09/2020 11:21

No way! My only exposure to weasels was through the Tufty club and as we can see, Willy Weasel was half as tall as an ice cream van! ShockGrin

I was driving across a moor and a mum and babies ran across the road. They were like a string of sausages

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 17/09/2020 11:42

Awwwwwww. Were they babies

Stopyourhavering64 · 17/09/2020 11:47

I saw one running across the road in front of me a couple of weeks ago....first time id seen one so close up - was so pleased , it made my day!
I was amazed at how tiny gorgeous and soft moles were when I found one sadly deceased in our garden years ago , it had such lovely little ?paws/feet too!

EileenBilton · 17/09/2020 11:54

I saw a duck-billed platypus in a wildlife park once. Expected it to be the size of an otter - it was a lot smaller.

was it wearing a Fedora and about to thwart the not-so clever in-ator of an evil genuis?
