How can I fix my posture without buying a new chair?

I have awful posture and am trying to fix it with exercises etc but I'm an awful slumper when sitting and have pretty bad chairs too: tub office chair, sofa etc. I was hoping somebody might have wisdom about a magic purchase I could make (cushion/ support?) that would help and turn me into more of a swan than a hedgehog?

.... brand...

Get an exercise ball and use it as a desk chair. You'll need to buy the correct one for your height.

That's more of a support for back pain I think.

You can also get braces to help pull you back into shape. Or a sit stand desk/ stool ?

I found this fixed itself when I took up running. The muscles in my back got much stronger and I didn't need to slouch any more. But it took a while - maybe two years.

I found my posture has got so much worse since working from home, so I ordered a back brace from amazon. It seems to be helping, adding in exercises a day I'm more aware of how I'm standing and sitting now. I miss my office chair Grin

You can buy tape that you stick on in certain places/patterns to help with posture. I often see sportspeople using it on various body parts e.g. knees, shins etc. for extra support. Not sure how easy it would be to apply on your back though without help from someone. Do a search for posture tape.

Oooo I have a really comfortable back thing like a bra that makes my posture great, I'll find a link, hang on..... I actually bought it for post surgery...

I know you said, not a new chair, but a new chair?

Having my office chair and monitor for the last few months has made such a difference to my posture and back pain.

Jeremyironseverything · 17/09/2020 09:57

The proper back braces are a short term fix but will make the problem worse long term, because the brace is doing the muscles work for them, so the muscles will themselves become even weaker.

Exercises to strengthen the back will work.

A rowing machine

You need a properly adjusted office chair in afraid.... And set a reminder every few hours to check your shoulders are down and back, which changes your posture too. It takes months and years to fix and I have a curvature of the spine.

Thanks for all these helpful replies. Yes, I'm resigning myself to the fact it will be a long road. So tempted by the posture correcting bras and braces but didn't realise they could make the problem worse. I'm looking so round shouldered - it needs to change!
