Books from your childhood

DD, year 5, had homework this week to interview someone about books they remember from their childhood. I suddenly remembered all the Jill Ferguson "Jill and her pony" books which I loved as a child. I've now purchased two for DD off the back of this. I wonder if they will be as I remembered them.

Has anyone re-read childhood books recently? I read The Outsiders recently which I brought for DS (11) and realised he was too young for it. I loved it as a teenager and read it over and over again. Reading it as an adult was really not the same experience.

The Chronicles of Narnia - the Christian symbolism went over my head.

Charlotte Sometimes - beautiful and rather sad. Does anyone else remember this one?

The Forgotten Bear by Molly Brett - the illustrations are gorgeous!

I loved pretty much anything to do with Enid Blyton - particularly the famous five, which was always my absolute favourite.

As an adult, I'm in a habit of buying the box sets. I have all of the Malory Towers, Naughtiest Girl and Famous Five books, and I'm eyeing up a Secret Seven box set, and some of her smaller series.

I read a heck of a lot in general, and I can pretty much get through one of her books in a day.. so I enjoy reading one every now and again, and if I ever have kids I'm happily prepared with lots of books ha ha. Shame my stepson isn't interested!

@MonkeyGoneToHeaven I hadn't read Charlotte Sometimes as a child but read it to my daughter and loved it. We read a lot of the books mentioned above, one of the reasons I was so happy about having a DD after two boys was the fact that I could share my favourite books with her. She is probably one of the few 17 year olds in her class who still read extensively for pleasure.

KM Peyton - I had totally forgotten Who Sir? Me Sir? Which I loved! I must see if I can order that as well.

The House on the Hill by Eilenn Dunlop. Oddly for a childhood book, it really held up and I enjoyed it for more than just the reminiscing.

I re- read The Minnipins (The Gamage Cup, in the US) by Carol Kendall every so often and always love it.

I will never turn down a Chalet School hate read. They drive me mad on so many levels and I get ridiculously over annoyed with the characters, but I am compelled to read one whenever I have the opportunity!

At your daughter's age I loved Michelle Magorian's books, particularly 'Back Home.'

Also loved Ballet Shoes (Noel Streatfield), What Katy Did (Susan Coolidge), The Secret Garden (Frances Hodgson Burnett).

My absolute favourite which I read over and over was the Flambards series by KM Peyton. Thinking about it is making me want to dig them out and re-read!

Who Sir, Me Sir? Trebizon, Flambards - they are all on my nostalgia shelf. Jane Gardam too but I think they were in the YA section of the library along with Judy Blume. The YA shelf was right next to the librarian's counter so always supervised Grin

The DC have these in their rooms-
Charlotte Sometimes
Rats of Nimh
We have always lived in a castle - Shirley Jackson
Come Back Lucy - Pamela Sykes
Out of the Hitler Time - Judith Kerr
Bobby Brewster- HE Todd

I've read pretty much everything by Enid Blyton with DD and still loved them just as much, the Adventure series in particular. Miss Happiness and Miss Flower (Rumer Godden) was a bit disappointing as an adult though, I remember loving it so much as a child but it fell a bit flat as an adult Sad
