Nervous online credit card user.

My mum is so worried about using her credit card online that it’s really holding her back. She’s becoming reliant on me to order everything for her. We’re talking road tax, Sainsbury’s and M&S here not some dodgy website.

What can I say to encourage her it’s safe? I’ve tried, but I think she thinks I’m not taking security seriously and at some point I’m going to lose £££££!

Would she feel more comfortable with a PayPal account, maybe? That way the retailer doesn't get given your card details.

My DM is the same, I had to buy all of her groceries online during lockdown!

EmbarrassedUser · 16/09/2020 10:04

I thought if it had a lock on the website you’d be fine. I also thought that if you bought something over £100 you’d be covered by the section 75 rule so the credit card company becomes jointly liable if something goes wrong eg she is defrauded.

But remember if using Paypal you don't get the section 75 protection that you get with credit card - not a problem for grocery shopping but a consideration with bigger purchases

PinkDaffodil2 · 16/09/2020 10:09

MSE has some good info about section 75 protection if you pay by credit card which might reassure her.

AriettyHomily · 16/09/2020 10:10

is she using the credit card as a credit facility? If not could she get a monzo and transfer whatever she needs on to there.

DappledThings · 16/09/2020 10:10

I told my mum the other day that a lot of people have got very rich inventing the multiple layers of encryption that keep card details safe online. She seemed to react well to that!

Also not everywhere accepts paypal. I use both credit card and paypal for online purchases and payments and it's probably about half of the sites that I can use paypal.

I do online shopping all the time, but my husband rarely does. Guess which one of us had their card cloned? It wasn't me.

Me too!

I’m dreading Christmas shopping for me, her and the in-laws. It’s going to be a full time job.

Thanks, She had a direct debit so it pays off the full amount every month. I’ll google monzo, I don’t know what it is.

So she’s happy for you to lose money on her behalf because she doesn’t think it’s secure but not to risk her own credit card. I’ve used my credit card online for about as long as it’s been possible to do so and never had any issue. If I were you, I’d just refuse to order for her or only do it using her card. Perhaps this might help

Could she not use a card with a low credit amount say £500. That is what we did when we started using one on line some years ago. As my confidence grew I used it more so the issuers raised the limit but this could always be altered.

im5050 · 16/09/2020 10:39

My dads the same
I just send him the links to whatever he wants to buy
So if it’s something from M&S he won’t trust his own judgment
But if I send him the link to M&S he will happily buy it
