Great British Bake Off - do you let your kids watch?

About a year ago I was watching an old episode of GBBO when my 2 young kids came to join me (they had cartoons in another room but migrated as they always do). They came in and we watched a couple of episodes and enjoyed it.

New series starting next week, but it does start at 8pm and I know theres a lot of sly smut as always. Do you let your kids watch it? (At a reasonable hour!)

Sly smut flies way over their heads, so yes! Or we watch together the next day at a more reasonable time :)

wedidntstartthefires · 16/09/2020 09:33

I would if they were interested (I've stopped watching since it went over to channel 4).
I think the innuendos would go over most primary aged children's heads? And if not the the horse has already bolted!

AntennaReborn · 16/09/2020 09:33

Sly smut? I think I have been watching bake off wrong Grin

To answer your question, yes I would let DD9 watch it, but she doesn't seem bothered

Mine enjoy it. The only episodes I've had to censor were the Cancer charity specials (eldest is a bit sensitive, we do discuss stuff like that but 1-2-1 rather than their rest TV time)

Ellmau · 16/09/2020 09:38

Lovely all age viewing. Just manage expectations so they don't think you can do the same for their birthday cake ;)

Not the Extra Slice though - that's definitely inappropriate.

TweetUsOnFacebook · 16/09/2020 09:40

It's fine. They won't get any of the innuendo. We record it and watch it the next day so we can skip the ads.

AntiSocialDistancer · 16/09/2020 09:41

Brilliant thank you! Haven't seen any C4 series at all so glad it's ok.

They wont get the innuendos.
Personally I find it a bit tedious! The sly smut, not the cakes.
We all watch it, mine love it.

I think it might change with Matt Lucas instead of Sandi Toksvig, I'm not convinced it will be as suitable as it has been.
Gazelda · 16/09/2020 09:44

DD has been watching it with me since she was about 8 or 9.

Like a pp, I was wary of the stand up to cancer specials. I recorded and skipped through the cancer features for a couple of years but she now watches them and I make sure she understands the clips and that not everyone dies from cancer because of science and medicine supported by money raised on tv shows such as GBB.

She's now 12, and we watch Extra Slice together.

Stinkyguineapig · 16/09/2020 09:44

My 14 yo has been asking when it starts for ages! Weve watched it since she was 9 or 10. My 10 yo isnt interested and goes to bed earlier than it finishes.

MinnieJackson · 16/09/2020 10:00

Yeah it's great, we like Masterchef aswell

spidermomma · 16/09/2020 10:20

They let things like that go over their heads they only want to watch them cooking anyway! Mine love it an on a Sunday we always try to do something similar that we thought was the best !!! X

knittingaddict · 16/09/2020 10:24

I don't know how old your children are, but the "smut" is pretty much school playground level stuff. Even if they did get it (which they probably won't) it isn't going to corrupt them.

I would absolutely let them watch. It's lovely to have family viewing with cakes, mostly nice people, no swearing and where supporting each other is more important than winning. I love it.

Ellmau · 16/09/2020 10:33

Sadly they won't be hugging one another in the new series ;(

Ellmau · 16/09/2020 10:34

Oh, and see if you can find the Junior Bakeoff series on Catchup somewhere - those feature child contestants and they are really good.

Stinkyguineapig · 17/09/2020 07:17

Sadly they won't be hugging one another in the new series ;(
I think there was a celebrity one shown during lockdown. I was getting really stressed out and shouting at the tv about them being too close to each other, hugging , paul Hollywood hand shakes etc and him squishing any sort of cake/bread! Blush

megletthesecond · 17/09/2020 07:19

We watched it when get were younger and it was on bbc1. But we just stopped when it moved to 4 as it finished later and the adverts are a pain.

movingonup20 · 17/09/2020 07:22

Mine watched from the very beginning, it was dd that suggested to me to watch - she was 9 then so all grown now. The humour is slightly more risqué now but it goes over little ones heads

Gladgreengrass · 17/09/2020 07:31

I'll miss Sandi! But I'm glad Noel is staying. Hope Matt Lucas doesn't make it too smutty. Seems odd that Pru is the only woman on the staff side as it were. I agree with everyone that the C4 version, I think in terms of the actually bakery, is not as good somehow. And enough with the blue cake colouring!

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 17/09/2020 07:40

Yes we love watching it together ds has watched it from a young age

The smutty comments go over their heads

longwayoff · 17/09/2020 07:40

I think they'll be fine although Matt Lucas seems an odd choice. We shall see. Noticed Netflix had bought up some old Come Dine with Me and flicked onto it to find that it is rated Mature and needs a parental control pin for access. Bewildering.

OntheWaves40 · 17/09/2020 07:42

I wouldn’t let them stay up til 9pm else they’ll get tired and cranky but I’ve put it on catch up next day earlier and watch it with them

reluctantbrit · 17/09/2020 07:49

DD watched the last two BBC series so she must have been 8 and thoroughly enjoyed it. We did the first C4 one but stopped as we just found it not as enjoyable.

I think a lot of the smut talk goes over their heads and it is not more than they may hear from older siblings or in school.

Compared to other crap on TV it is a nice thing to watch.

SockYarn · 17/09/2020 07:54

Prepare to be disappointed. It's not a patch on the BBC series with Sue, Mel and Mary.
