How much to pay young adults for doing some odd jobs?

I had my neighbours kids come round and do some odd job stuff for me and they will come round tomorrow too. But I'm unsure what to pay them!
So they did a bit if chopping some branches off bushes, sanding and painting the front door step and tomorrow they will do the grass and clean our lpg tank

(This is in Prep for house photos being taken for it going on the market)

But I'm clueless as to what I should give them as payment. I thought maybe £10 an hour per person or is that not enough or too generous?!
Think they did about 4 or 5 hours today

How old are they?

OneEpisode · 15/09/2020 21:40

Do they do this sort of work professionally? If this was my actual friends I wouldn’t pay them as such; I’d walk their dogs, pay for a meal. Not an hourly rate?

Voice0fReason · 15/09/2020 21:56

Their age is very relevant here.
I don't think you need to pay £10 per hour but It sounds like they have worked hard so possibly £5-£7.50ph depending on age

WildWaterSwimmer · 15/09/2020 22:03

I think £5 per hour would be a reasonable rate for older teenagers. That's more generous than the national minimum wage for their age.

Horehound · 15/09/2020 22:14

I think one is 18 and one is 20 maybe. Not sure exactly. They are lovely though
"Kid" was the wrong choice of word apologies!
No they don't do this as a job. One was made redundant so I thought he could do with some money and then when I asked they said "x is home from uni too so she can help."

Fine by me cause I need loads done!

I think £10 per hour is a bit much if l am honest - maybe don't do it as an hourly rate and just give them an amount for the whole job if that makes sense

HowFastIsTooFast · 15/09/2020 22:18

For that age group and that kind of work I'd say £10 an hour would be fair if you can afford that and you're happy with the job they've done.

What would it have cost to get a professional in?

If this was a long standing arrangement where neighbour kids were doing your mowing or washing your car regularly for months on end then yes maybe £5 per hour would be fine but for a one-off job like yours sounds I think you could be more generous.

Horehound · 15/09/2020 22:21

Yeh that's what I'm thinking it's a one off job and it's really helping me out. I imagine a gardener would have cost me £50 at least and then the step I think maybe a fair bit really.

So maybe £50per person covering the two days would your teens be happy with that?!

What needs doing OP? Have they been pretty professional? I agree ‘kid’ misrepresents them - my mid teen could take days doing that plus would need lots of direction...

Horehound · 15/09/2020 22:24

No I wouldn't say professional but I didn't expect that either. I just said make it look presentable enough for photos to be taken.
So tomorrow I need then to paint the rest of the steps, trim back some vine stuff up the wall of the house, clean the lpg tank, maybe do a bit if weeding and to cut the grass.

£8-£10/hour if they did a good job.

megletthesecond · 15/09/2020 22:30

I pay £10 an hour for a very sensible older teen to mow, rake and prune the garden.

But as yours is a big job over a couple of days I'd not pay quite so much.

Horehound · 15/09/2020 22:35

Ok so maybe £8 an hour then would be good.

I'm so out of touch! I remember loving getting £5 for washing the car lol

You should really have agreed with two adults the amount upfront. You have no idea what their expectations are.

How many hours would you say the have done each over both days? 4/5?

Minot wage for 18-20 Yr olds is £6.50 per hour. I'd round that to £7 and pay that.

£5 went a lot further when I was young than it does now

A local lad, aged 19, came over to clear our stream banks and overgrown parts of our garden - it's a very wild rural setting. He offered £7 an hour but it was very hard physical work and that seemed to be taking advantage. I gave him £10 an hour, he was delighted and worked extremely hard. So we were all happy.
