How to teenagers find out their National Insurance Number?

helloworlditsme · 15/09/2020 19:58

I remember back in the day being sent my national insurance number on the old style red and blue plastic card........I felt so grown up 😂.

Anyway my DC are now both teenagers and I’ve no idea as to how they would get notified of their NI number. I’m assuming there’s someone with more knowledge than me on here who could let me know.

If you’re a UK resident aged 19 or under

You’ll normally be sent a National Insurance number automatically, in the 3 months before your 16th birthday, if both the following are true:

  • you live in the UK
  • a parent has filled in aChild Benefitclaim form for you

If you’re aged 16 to 19 and did not get one, call HM Revenue and Customs.

Oh man, I loved that card. It meant I could prove I was 16 to buy fags in the shop Grin

Ds got the letter as others have said.

Runnerduck34 · 15/09/2020 20:25

My dc got a letter but I'd like to know how you find it when they lose the letter!

islandislandisland · 15/09/2020 20:30

If he has a passport you can use this via personal tax account to access the letter online and (I think) print off, pretty sure it's a PDF. See anyfucker's limk. You use the passport number to verify him.

dementedpixie · 15/09/2020 20:30

The link above says you can phone or write to get hold of it. I have filed dd's in my box file

Lovethecrown · 15/09/2020 20:41

I don't think it's linked to child benefit as I don't get any CB and my son got his NI letter a few weeks ago around the time he turned 16.

notso · 15/09/2020 20:57

@Lovethecrown do you claim it without getting the payment?
I do this and so completely forgot about it and didn't update our address when we moved. That was the reason given for DS not receiving his NI number, or rather it was sent out but to our old address.

PleasantVille · 15/09/2020 21:03

@Afolnerd

It should be sent to them around their 16th birthday. I finally realised at about 16 1/2 my ds hadn’t had his. Quick phone call to them and it arrived a few weeks later.

Quick tip. Don’t lose the letter, they need to show the actual letter to employers etc and a replacement is £70! One of my ds mates found out the hard way.

Where do you live? No employer needs to see the actual letter you just tell them the number in England and you don't have to pay to get another letter.
RandomMess · 15/09/2020 21:05

My two never got there's 🙄 I think it's because we moved house and CB got updated and we perhaps changed CB offices and somehow they got lost in the system...

dementedpixie · 15/09/2020 21:08

It is linked to claiming child benefit. Even if you claim but opt out of payment:

By claiming Child Benefit:

  • you can getNational Insurance creditswhich count towards yourState Pension
  • your child will automatically get a National Insurance number when they’re 16 years old

If you choose not to get Child Benefit payments, you should still fill in and send off the claim form.

RedStreetMonument · 15/09/2020 21:09

@Rhinobabe

Mine has a national insurance number attached to their child trust fund - I recently noticed it when I was checking it online. They are nowhere near 16. So you could look there?
My ds got his NI number by post just before he was 16 - I only noticed it was the same as his CTF number then.
TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 15/09/2020 21:11

DS1s letter arrived on his 16th birthday. I thought that was cool, but I'm a bit of a loser Grin

I lost my NI card years ago! I hope no one ever wants to see it Blush

PremierInn · 15/09/2020 21:14

Anyone who paid for a replacement used a scam website so make sure you go on the official website if applying

My kids ones never arrived - I can only guess that something somewhere wasn't updated when we moved house. GP records were, school records were, tax credits were, so maybe cb wasn't?

Lovethecrown · 15/09/2020 21:58

@notso yes I think so as I had a letter from HMRC back in March saying although I was entitled to CB but not claiming..... and to let them know if my D.C. was going to stay on at school etc etc. I couldn't claim CB as was over the threshold. Is this what you mean?

dementedpixie · 15/09/2020 22:00

Sounds like you made a claim but opted out of payment

Lovethecrown · 15/09/2020 22:07

Actually I never sent the reply back as didn't know whether DC would stay In eduction or not so perhaps if you sent the reply saying they were then you didn't get an NI number? I must fill the form in now to let them know dc is staying in eduction.... yes I believe everyone is "entitled" to CB but you had to opt out if family earnings over threshold which we were and so did opt out.

Erictheavocado · 15/09/2020 22:15

As others have said, you should be able to find it by creating a government gateway account. If you download the app onto his phone, he will be able to print a letter from there to show to any employer who needs it.

dementedpixie · 15/09/2020 22:16

You must have made a claim in the past if you opted out of payment. You didn't have to opt out, you could have got the money and then the higher earner pays it back later.

PleasantVille · 16/09/2020 08:21

The staying in education reply and the NI number are independent, you get the number regardless but with half a million plus new 16 year olds every year there are bound to be hiccups, it's easy to sort out though
Toomboom · 16/09/2020 08:31

I never had a card with my NI number. I just memorised the number I was given [ I am early 60's ].
My 19 yr old had a letter giving him his NI number when he was 16, , no card.

maslinpan · 16/09/2020 08:45

I memorised my number and it always makes me feel like a slightly more organised person than I really am.

Seeline · 16/09/2020 08:51

My Ds never got his NI number - we only realised after he turned 18. He just rang them up and they sorted it for him. My DD got hers just before her 16th. Both were registered for CB, we hadn't moved, and I did the same things for both children. Some do just get missed.
