What hobbies do your kids have?

SuperEkstra · 15/09/2020 18:59

My DD (8) refuses to do any activities/hobbies. Lots of this is due to anxiety. She will only try things if they interest her, and the things that interest her are On a screen (Robux, minecraft, Pokemon). She loves animals and thus only sport she is willing to try is horse riding.

I'm trying to think outside of the box to find her out-of-the-house activities she might try.

Her DF gets v frustrated about her lack of activity as both he and I had lots of hobbies growing up. DD just wants to do sedentary things.

Why does she only want to do sedentary things? My DS is like that but has stability and coordination issues and long term therapy. Does she have pain when e.g. running?

Grumpbum123 · 15/09/2020 19:37

9yr old pre lockdown was doing Cubs, swimming, riding. Now only riding.
6yr old only riding as he’s always tired and iron deficient

NancyBotwinBloom · 15/09/2020 19:46

Brownies.
Dancing
Karate

If it's the team part of kids activities that she doesn't like then individual sports like swimming, archery, climbing, biking, tennis, hiking, fencing are the first ones that come to mind. Wheels are quite popular at that age around here, skateboarding, roller skates etc.

powkin · 15/09/2020 20:13

Can she go hunting for Pokemon? I have no idea what the right terminology is as have never done it!

powkin · 15/09/2020 20:13

What is she anxious about?

Firefly89 · 15/09/2020 20:14

There is a first aid club for kids near us and a lace making club for kids which are both less active, do you have anything like that near by?
Brownies or cubs might be good as they do a range from active to creative things and they might have an animal badge she could do?
Otherwise the other kids clubs near us are pretty sporty like karate, swimming, tennis
Maybe there’s a gaming club she could try? One of our primary schools does a dungeons and dragon club and a chess club?

Millie2013 · 15/09/2020 20:16

DD (7) does ballet and brownies (via zoom) at the moment. Ordinarily, she also does gymnastics, as an after school club
We’ve got a pony, so I thought she’d want to ride, but she’s not that interested

NancyBotwinBloom · 15/09/2020 20:39

Just out of interest how much does a pony cost each month?

Planetaryexplorer · 15/09/2020 22:00

My dd is 7. She does brownies, dance and piano. Pre - lockdown she also did gymnastics, kick boxing and swimming lessons. She likes to ride her bike a lot. She is very high energy though so needs lots of physical activity.
My ds is 10. He plays cricket, rugby and football. He also enjoys lego and gaming.

ilovebagpuss · 15/09/2020 22:44

DD 10 does nothing she is too shy to join cubs/scouts because of the promise. DD13 does two types of dance and Guides. She has been dancing since she was 5.
I don’t subscribe to pushing clubs etc unless the child wants to. Reading walking swimming with parents plenty of things to do some people are just not into those planned sports/clubs.

SuperEkstra · 16/09/2020 15:13

To those that asked - she basically got some kind of performance anxiety, I thinks she's also always had separation anxiety Sad

9yo dd1 collects stones, polishes them and tries to identify them. She also writes and acts out her own movies using my phone.

Aebj · 16/09/2020 15:29

Ds 1 is now 16 . He used to do tae known do and footy but now only does swimming, army cadets and Venturer scouts
Ds2 14 does navy cadets and swimming. He used to do Cubs ( he didn’t want to go to scouts and can’t play footy because he has a pacemaker).

mbosnz · 16/09/2020 15:39

One does rollerskating, ice-skating, archery, and painting, and swimming. She used to do horse-riding.

The other does embroidery, ballet, writing, and used to do violin. She's also looking to take up aikido.

spiderlight · 16/09/2020 15:41

DS is 13 - he does fencing and Air Cadets, loves cycling, but given the choice would spend all day every day playing flight simulators on his PC!

Lardlizard · 16/09/2020 15:48

What about bike riding or scooting ?

ritzbiscuits · 16/09/2020 15:49

If she loves Pokemon have you tried Pokemon Go (geo caching)? I know it's another screen but my 7yo loves Pokemon and this really encourages him to get out of the house. He walked for 2 1/2 hours around our local area the other day! All without realising!

Lardlizard · 16/09/2020 15:50

Mine like martial arts football and swimming but we all love the beach the best

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 16/09/2020 15:55

Mine do swimming and Cubs as official activities. They also ski with DH (their lessons haven't restarted yet) and they go canoeing and camping with him too. I'm sometimes invited on the camping trips.

Springersrock · 16/09/2020 16:04

DD1 is very arty, lots of painting and drawing. Not particularly active I guess.

DD2 does horse riding

DD2 is very anxious and has a social phobia and some days the only thing that gets her out of the house is her pony. She says she always feels calm and relaxed when she’s riding - it’s good exercise (along with lugging haynets around, mucking out and poo picking their field) so she’s quite strong and fit.

Has she tried horse riding? Lots of riding schools will let them help out on a weekend in exchange for lessons or a ride

Willowmartha1 · 16/09/2020 16:05

My dd 8 is exactly the same but she has suspected ASD. She used to go swimming once a week before lockdown and I hope to start that again after Christmas. I think she would join a Dance or gymnastics club but they are all off due to Covid. I've registered her for brownies twice now and each time have heard nothing back. Tricky !!

SocraticJunkieWannabe · 16/09/2020 17:42

DD currently does football. In the past done swimming, trampolining, Brownies/Guides, drama, netball, science club, computer/coding club (not all at the same time!)
However, she asked to do all of those activities. I wouldn't have pushed her to do anything she didn't want to. I did virtually no activities/hobbies as a child and don't feel it held me back in any way!
Would something non-performance based and non-competitive eg computer/science/gardening club be an option for your DD if you really want to find something for her?

BrieAndChilli · 16/09/2020 17:49

DS1 age 13, none! He doesn’t do organised things (ASD), he’s tried lots over the years but never enjoyed anything. He prefers drawing maps at home and occasionally going climbing with DH.

DD is the opposite and would do everything if we had the time and money!! Currently does scouts, horse riding and 3 different drama classes.

DS2 also hates clubs and prefers screens but he does do Cubs.

reluctantbrit · 16/09/2020 18:19

DD is a Scout and does performing arts.

She also swims, rookie lifesaver, and rides.

Riding is great for anxiety, DD loves the ponies and horses and the stable is the nearly only time she is calm and concentrates. Not the cheapest, we pay £25/per group lesson but it is worth it,

A quite life is ok for me as long as there is some kind of physical activity.
