What does 'in your minumum term' mean? (Tv packages)

Had a price hike from BT today (not a lot in the grand scheme, but it is 20% of the total price of the tv package). The email states 'if you are in your minimum term you can cancel without a fee'.

I am reading this as if you are still within your initial contract period (i.e the minimum term), you can cancel without the fee?

I suppose it means they are changing the terms of the contract you agreed too so they let you cancel for free

I could be wrong but yes thats what I would think it meant.
I think it's due to the new fair contract rules that came in because of the huge hikes in phone contracts etc.

So if for example you took on a tv or phone package that they have said is for a minimum of 12 months and 3 months in they decided that the price would increase by 20% you can cancel without penalty because the fair contract agreement (not the official term but I can't remember what it's called!) means you should not see any increases within the first 12 months that you signed up for because it voids the existing agreement.

If you make a fuss with BT and explain it isn’t clear (which is obviously wasn’t to you), then they will allow you to cancel free or charge anyway. You just have to put up a bit of a fight. Assuming you want to cancel.

Thanks all. I tried to clarify with one of their advisors on chat but they just didn't seem to get what I was asking. Wanted to check myself before actually calling them!

Are you still within your original contract term? If they change the agreed contract then you should be able to cancel with no fee as thats not what you signed up for originally

Prepare yourself. BT are awful to deal with.
