Any opticians about - prescription swimming goggles

I don't currently have a copy of my glasses prescription (I have requested but not sure how long that will take) but am I right in thinking that if I wear contact lenses in -3.25 and -3.75 then -3.5 and -4 is the strength to go for in goggles. I have a mild astigmatism but it's not corrected for in my contact lenses if I remember correctly. I'm not looking for perfect correction, just something so I can see signs, the clock, people in blue swimming costumes etc.

Yep - sounds about right.

Is there a reason you can't just wear your contacts and a normal pair of goggles? This is what I do (I also couldn't not wear any glasses/contacts etc in the pool, I'd be a a liability!)

But if you can't, I think that the difference my contacts prescription and my glasses prescription (so I guess that might be similar for goggles) is 0.5 if that helps.

0.25 diopter won't make hardly any difference

@LockdownMayhem wearing contact lenses in the pool puts you at risk of infection and potential loss of sight. Prescription goggles are much safer.

OP I'm very jealous. Our pool only opened yesterday and I'm now in isolation. Do you actually need a paper copy of your prescription or can you just ask the person at the opticians to read it to you?

WaffleCash · 15/09/2020 11:32

I don't need a paper copy but it's impossible to get through on the phone right now. Goggles generally only come in 0.5 increments so can't just match contact lenses prescription.

I'm very lucky as our pool has been open since beginning of August. Normally I manage without goggles, but now they're using the big electronic screen that used to have a clock for covid messages, there's lots of extra signage about what end you get in, direction to swim, not waiting at the end if there is someone there etc. and it would be more relaxing to be able to see

My optician warns me every check up that this is very naughty! I do occasionally with disposables that I remove straight afterwards but I'm aware that you shouldn't really.

Yes, swimming in contacts puts you at risk of a difficult to treat, painful corneal infection called acanthoemeba keratitis.
3.50 and 4 will be fine.

ManxRhyme · 15/09/2020 22:17

I'm - 7 and - 7.5 but my swim goggles are - 6 both sides as that's as high as they go if just buying from amazon. Works fine for swimming. Can even see the clock at the end of the lane from the other side of the pool.

Thanks all, just need to decide what pair to get now.
