Age 4-5 coats don't exist

I'm looking at winter coats for my daughter.

We live semi-rurally so I like to get properly waterproof stuff so I look at sites like Regatta/Peter Storm/Trespass.

They all stock 3-4 and 5-6 but not 4-5.

I'm not sure if it's just the coats I"m looking at; has anyone else noticed this?

Oh looking at them they skip a size, so 6-7 isn't there and 8-9 - never knew this!!

Well the 3-4 coat she has is too small and the 5-6 I had delivered is massive. So I guess waterproof is off the cards this year.

JoJo maman Bebe do great waterproof, warm coats up to 5yrs, might be worth a look. I think there is a Mumsnet discount code as well.

Thanks I'll take a look!

Frugi are another one for lovely and fully waterproof coats with gorgeous designs, they do age 4-5 and that's where I get my dc winter coats from.

I just got a winter coat for DS from H&M and it actually looks great - really well made, good padding and the fabric looks like it will be waterproof. I would never have thought to look there but for another thread on here, but I’m really pleased with it.

DS is quite tall for his age (he’s 4) so the 5-6 is fine on him, it has growing room but it’s not ridiculous. Might be worth trying the next size up in a few brands?

Spudlet · 14/09/2020 17:43

Joules things seem to come up slightly small, IME. So might be worth looking there.

BikeRunSki · 14/09/2020 17:44

After about age 5, a lot of kids courted manufacturers don’t overlap sizes in a lot a garments, go 4-5, 6-7, 8-9 etc.

Lidl have their waterproof range in at the moment and it's great. Properly waterproof, cheap and they do the separate trousers and coats that match which I like as the all in ones are a pain to put on and when they need the loo.

We got outdoor coats from Go Outdoors. They are Hi gear. We got our 8yo a 9-10 and 6yo a 5-6 last year. Both fit fine. Can you get to a big outdoor store to look at a few different brands?

JimmyTheBrave · 14/09/2020 17:46

We went in H&M recently and I did notice they had some lovely boy's coats, the girls ones however I wasn't keen on. Lots of shiny padding and cinched waists.

DD is tall too but the 5-6 swaps her arms. I know I need to take her to try some on but I'm so lazy I'd rather get things delivered Grin

Have you looked at Muddy Puddles? They are who our local forest school recommend

JimmyTheBrave · 14/09/2020 17:48

Lots of great suggestions, thanks everyone! I'll brave a proper visit to the shops and take a look at those recommendations.

Yeah Muddy Puddles or Frugi.

JimmyTheBrave · 14/09/2020 17:50

*swamps her arms not swaps - that would be an additional feature that frankly nobody would need

Unfortunately totally normal and I often rolled up sleeves for DD. Don't get me on waterproof trousers...

I found H&M on the smaller side for their sizes, so a 4-6 is often more a 4-5 I found.

Trespass is also cut smaller, you may be able to get away with 5-6.

DD often wore boy coats as I find the pink and fluffy girl version just not practicable for us. Hence the reason we always ended in Trespass, Decathlon or GoOutdoors.

Next, surprisingly, do some very good waterproof coats (usually called 'Performance') and they go up in individual years (so age 4, age 5 etc.). Also have a look at Muddy Puddles. I loved their stuff when mine was little - properly waterproof but flexible and not rustly.

MoonDelay · 14/09/2020 18:36

I've had this trouble recently. I bought a brilliant waterproof Trespass coat online for my daughter from Winfields Outdoors

MoonDelay · 14/09/2020 18:40

My daughter is 4 early next year so I bought 3-4, still had to roll the sleeves over once

Spudlet · 14/09/2020 18:44

Oh, that’s a shame about the boy/girl thing. I just assumed they’d be more or less the same Sad

BikeRunSki · 14/09/2020 20:45

We are an outdoorsy family and I higghky recommend these H&M jackets. We must have had 4 or 5 of them when the dc were younger (now 9 &12). They are warm m, dry and reflective, and perform like much more expensive coats. Avd they are pretty cheap and don’t skip sizes!

Boringnamechanging · 14/09/2020 20:56

I've just been complaining about this with coats and also boxer pants. Anyone know where to get boxers that will fit a slim 4 year old running out of space in 3-4 but most places don't do 4-5.
