Children’s

SerenaVanDerWoodsen · 14/09/2020 16:21

children’s

GroupSects · 14/09/2020 16:21

The activity belongs to the children and children is already a plural so the apostrophe goes before the s.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 14/09/2020 16:27

100% children’s. Smile

FunTimes2020 · 14/09/2020 16:28

Children's

anuffername · 14/09/2020 18:27

As above, but I can't think of any sentence in which that combination of words would be used? "They" can't be an activity.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 14/09/2020 18:33

A very good point, @anuffername

Surely it would be:

It is an organised childrens activity so it...

Or

they are part of an organised childrens activity so they...

AriettyHomily · 14/09/2020 18:33

'It is an organised....

Makes a lot more sense

HeronLanyon · 14/09/2020 18:40

Or if the ‘they’ is important ‘they offer organised children’s activities’ but if it is a company or a firm etc it would be ‘it offers organised children’s activities‘.
More likely to be ‘it’ - ie a singular thing making the offering.

HeronLanyon · 14/09/2020 18:41

Look at us taking all the fun and joy out of kids play !!!

HeronLanyon · 14/09/2020 18:41

Kids’ play. SORRY

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 14/09/2020 18:51

Correct grammar is always fun @HeronLanyon!

tararabumdeay · 14/09/2020 18:57

The apostrophe replaces a long lost 'e' sound as in, "The dog(e)s balls." becomes "The dog's balls.' meaning the one dog has more than one ball. Or, "The dogs' balls." meaning that many dogs have many balls.

Children is already a plural so Childrens' is never correct.

‘Sean and Maddy Childrens were handed an envelope at the hotel lobby. Written on it was ‘The Childrens’ tickets for tomorrow’s excursion’.

I am so so sorry tara because of course you are right - I felt the urge to try my best to be an asshole and come up with some nonsense Grin

HeronLanyon · 14/09/2020 19:21

Their name should actually be Children for that to work.

BogRollBOGOF · 14/09/2020 19:29

The children's joint party was cancelled by Borris Johnson.

The children's bedroom was a mess.

tararabumdeay · 14/09/2020 19:30

The tickets for Sean and Maddy's children tomorrow.
Sean and Maddy's children's tickets for tomorrow.
Maddy and Sean's children's tickets...

If in doubt leave it out.

The tickets for Shaunette and Matty Jones are ready for tomorrow.

Children's.

Childrens' with an apostrohe after the S doesn't exist. That only happens with words whose plurals end in S (which child/children obviously doesn't).

HeronLanyon · 14/09/2020 19:47

Mr & Mrs Children have spent a lifetime dealing with them Childrens’ bills, cars, houses etc. So they would certainly disagree ! Grin
They put their foot down When it came to their own children though, and asked everyone to refer to them as ‘theChildren children’ rather than they Childrens’ children’. Less bother all round.

HeronLanyon · 14/09/2020 19:49

Them and they both should be the. God this is tough ! Praying there is a surname Children so my madness may have some actual point.

tararabumdeay · 14/09/2020 21:27

I met a Mr Argument and a child called Child but not a Mr, Miss, Missus, Master Children.

HeronLanyon · 14/09/2020 21:57

tararabumdeay in that case my efforts were in vain.
You were of course right.
Childrens’ is never right (except in my fictional novella with fictional characters off to their excursion at the apostrophe factory)

beingatwat it is indeed !!

tararabumdeay · 14/09/2020 22:30

I want to read a novella set in an apotrophe factory.
The Childrens' family are the protagonists and the Child's the poor workers.

HeronLanyon · 14/09/2020 22:46
Grin Well the Childrens’ (Sean and maddy obvs) clearly visited the factory shop on their way out during a previous excursion !

By the way this apostrophe factory clearly has major supply problems.

Sometime’s the market I’s awash and people desperately try to u’se them up even where they aren’t’ suitable. Often in shop’s. Almost always greengrocer’s laundering apostrophe’s. Need’s must, I gues’s. What day’s we live in.

Sometimes Ive seen its a case of low stocks - theyve just run out and people cant find them even when essential.

Might ‘stock up f’or Hard Brex’it.
