False widow. I'd kill it personally as bites from them are nasty but deaths are rare nowadays.

MsIrrational · 14/09/2020 13:57

I tried to catch it in a glass but it hid inside the fence panel ahhh!

It looks like it could be a false widow. They hunt flies and tend to be quite shy, and they won't bite unless you provoke them by poking or trapping them with your hand. If they do bite then it will be about as bad as a wasp sting - painful but not life-threatening!

It’s outside yes?

Leave it alone

KingaRoo · 14/09/2020 15:01

Definitely leave it alone if its outside. We have loads of these on the outside of our house. They are very shy and don't come in!

MsIrrational · 14/09/2020 15:25

We had one in the young DC's room recently so I am nervous that it's going to come in. But I'll leave it alone. I've done a bit of reading about them so I'll leave it in peace.

It's outside. For that reason I wouldn't worry about it.

We used to have a few of these inside and just let them get on with it. We now have a lot of cellar spiders and I think they've probably munched their way through them.

Ah you're lucky, I've only got one and he's so thick hes nearly got squished twice by accident. I keep having to shoo him into a safe spot..

I find it strange when people say, no worse than a wasp sting!

I know many more people who have been bitten by fw in past few years than wasps. In fact I don't know any 1⃣ recently who has been bitten by a wasp.
I do however know directly 5 people who have endured extremely nasty bites from fw, each one needing antibiotics, and people who know people.
Our local hospital, sees people regularly with fw at this time.

I would not in any way knowingly leave such a spider in any proximity to my dc.
Furthermore the reproduce in large numbers and seem to form colonies.
This is why they very quickly form infestations.

This is why despite being so called.. Shy... (as appose to the spiders who come and introduce themselves) people get bitten lots... Because there are so many of them.
. One person I knew nearly lost his arm, extremely fit, gym going tall man...

False widow bite can be really nasty. Someone I knows husband, ended up in hospital with an infected bite on his calf. He was in for a week.
Very nasty.

I found one in my car bootShock
