Anybody pay to get their ironing done???

Now facing redundancy for the second time in 18 months and toying with the idea of setting up a domestic ironing business from home. If any of you use a service like this, would you mind answering a couple of questions for me?

  1. How much do you pay? Are you charged per item, by weight or by time?
  2. Do you expect all ironing returned on hangers with plastic sleeves, or is folded OK? (Obviously trousers & dresses would be hung, but what about t-shirts etc?)
  3. Would collection/delivery be required?

Anything else I need to consider?

Thanks for reading

Hi OP,

DH gets his shirts ironed, we pay per shirt (£1.50) and she puts them back on the hangers we gave them to her on. They're dropped off and collected by me but she's very local.

I hope someone else will be along soon who can be more help.

My cleaner used to do my ironing too. She would collect it at the end of her clean and then drop it off 2 days later. We stopped using her for ironing when her car broke down and she could no longer drop it off, as waiting a week was too long for us. She folded most of it back into my basket and then hung up on my hangers shirts etc. We paid by the hour, a pound less than for her cleaning rate.

My mum used one for a while. It was a dry-cleaners as well. Paid by the basket rather than by weight or by item. She did use metal hangers, no plastic covers though I'm sure that could be provided for £++. Around £13 per basket.

I used to but with reduced outgoings and less going into the office I don't have as much that needs ironing any more

I have used various services and I deffo would again. One charged by weight, collected it and brought it back on hangers in plastic, one was my cleaner so I would drop it off and collect it and I paid her her hourly rate. Would only use it at the most once a month though when the bedding built up.

Wow! Surely buying decent non-iron shirts would be cheaper and easier? DH buys Calvin Klein ones and they always look great.

I do. Charged £15 a bag and drop off & collect.

She is v busy.

You drop in a bag & collect and it's folded, shirts only on hangers. I used to provide hangers but since lockdown we don't have as many shirts.

Round here seems to be a very in demand service.

Used to. Change of career/life circumstances/area and don't anymore.

One was a friends mum who wanted some extra money. I used to drop it off & collect it. (She didn't drive & I didn't mind, used to stop for a cuppa). She charged a set amount each week as she wanted an amount she could rely on & I was happy with that. Lots folded into a basket but anything needing it, on a hanger / I'd just throw all the spares in the basket.

Second one was our cleaner. She'd take it in a Friday when cleaning & bring it back Monday morning (had a key obviously) she charged per item and likewise would put appropriate things in hangers and the rest in the basket.

I would think most people these days would be horrified getting 'regular' stuff in plastic - maybe for a special dress or something, but ordinarily, no.

If it was me (which it will never be🤣) I'd get a little ban with rails in the back. Lying it down in the car doesn't end well!

I'd prefer it to be delivered than to collect it these days.

My old cleaner used to do an IKEA bag full for £20. I've still not forgiven her for moving abroad....She'd even iron bedding!

My current ironing lady does 25 items for £20, I supply her with hangers, she collects and delivers, usually brings it back within 48 hrs. I give her our ironing in a plastic crate, and whatever doesn't need hanging comes back folded in the crate. She charges extra to do bedding though.

CrunchyNutNC · 14/09/2020 18:32

Our cleaner does it when she is here - she sorts laundry, folds, and irons/folds what needs ironing.

WellTidy · 14/09/2020 18:34

Yes, our cleaner does ironing. She spends a fixed time cleaning and a fixed time ironing. She does it in our home, and we’ve worked out that she can do a basket in about 1 hour 30 minutes. She folds or hangs, depending on what the item is. We pay her the same rate for ironing as we do for cleaning, which is £12/hour. We pay an agency fee on top.

Our former cleaner did ironing as well as cleaning. DH is currently moaning that he needs ironed shirts and trousers for work. I actually don’t mind ironing, but i already do by far the largest proportion of housework and am not prepared to do even more when he does so much less than i do.
