Opinions on the name Dylan?

My husband and I are expecting our second son later in the year, and name discussions pop up almost every day!
The main obstacle in order to come to an agreement is the fact that he is English, and I'm Swedish. We live in Sweden and plan to stay here long term. However, I would like our childrens' names to reflect their heritage and so we're trying to come up with a name that works in both cultures. This has been a much bigger problem than anticipated because one name has different connotations in England vs Sweden! We finally agreed to the name Isaac for our first born and my husband would like the name Dylan for our second. I don't mind Dylan, it's not a Swedish name but easy enough to pronounce and not too obscure (in Sweden, everyone has heard of Bob)!
Basically I have no connection with the name but want to find out what "kind" of name it is in England at the moment? Unfortunately most names bring up a mental image of that person, and I would like for him to have a fairly neutral name that doesn't get him immediately labeled as something. We have thoughts of moving over for a year or so when they are older, partly to spend more time with their grand parents and cousins, but also to become more connected to their English side :)

So any thoughts on the name Dylan, and whether or not it goes well with Isaac, are much appreciated!

It's a lovely name, and also goes well with Isaac. Congratulations!

DottyDotAgain · 14/09/2020 13:23

I love it, but then I have a ds called Dylan, so I would say that! I think it's a lovely gentle name - I love how it sounds Smile and yes I think it goes really well with Isaac!

Reminds me of The Magic Roundabout.

Personally I wouldn't think of it as neutral. Lovely name, but definitely associated with a kind of louche, hippie lifestyle/attitude. Or is that the old view of it? Perhaps other posters will refute.

Shayisgreat · 14/09/2020 13:30

I like Dylan! The Dylans I've met have been lovely. I don't think it's as popular now as it was 10/15 years ago.

MikeUniformMike · 14/09/2020 13:35

@Alienna, it is a welsh name, and the welsh pronunciation isn't Dillun.
It's a bit of a naughty boy's name.

unmarkedbythat · 14/09/2020 13:35

I like Dylan :) I know a handful of Dylans of a range of ages from 8 up to 63. Goes well with Isaac. There was a male Dylan and a female Dylan in ds2's primary class, and he has just gone into secondary school.

Wrt associations... other than the Dylans I know, I think of Dylan Thomas first and then Bob Dylan. Both positive associations for me!

Newchapter2020 · 14/09/2020 13:37

I don't know of any Dylan's, but it makes me think of a happy, cheeky boy Smile

Stompythedinosaur · 14/09/2020 13:39

I like the name Dylan. I think it has an association with Wales and is quite a hippyish name. I imagine that a Dylan would have long hair and play the guitar!

JaJaDingDong · 14/09/2020 13:40

It's not an English name, it's a Welsh name. And it's pronounced more like Dullan than Dillan.

ChickensMightFly · 14/09/2020 13:46

I don't know any Dylan's at all (though obviously I've heard of famous poet Dylan Thomas, which is a lovely link imo). My impression of the name is that it has a nice ring to it and no negative associations. A fab name any boy could make his own.

BogRollBOGOF · 14/09/2020 13:57

A pleasant name. Slightly cheeky. Nothing negative. Smile

Rae36 · 14/09/2020 13:59

There are 3 Dylans in my ds's class at school. He's 8. So it is popular round our way. All the Dylans I know are nice kids, I'm not aware of any particular associations with the name.

ShivD · 14/09/2020 14:02

Definitely a welsh name and agree that it’s ‘dullan’ rather than Dillon.

It’s my uncles name and he’s a nice person so I think it’s a good name for the reason.

JuniLoolaPalooza · 14/09/2020 14:03

It was very popular when my DD was born, across all sorts of "types" of people so I'd say it was quite neutral. Doesn't seem as popular now.

AllPlayedOut · 14/09/2020 14:06

I'm not a fan and every Dylan I've met has been a bit of brat.

Chickenitalia · 14/09/2020 14:06

I know a couple, all boys under 8. They’re all nice boys from nice families. They all have a family connection to Wales. Can’t think of any negatives about it tbh.

wizzbangfizz · 14/09/2020 14:07

Like it and only know one in my DC school

JemimaTiggywinkle · 14/09/2020 14:11

It’s a nice name, perfectly suitable for a boy of your son’s age, without being too overused.

Yes, it is Welsh in origin, but it’s also widely used in England, with the pronunciation “Dillun”.

Avery7 · 14/09/2020 14:11

Love it, I wanted to call DS Dylan but DH wasn't as much of a fan.

SmellsLikeAHamsterCage · 14/09/2020 15:24

I love it and I think it goes really well with Isaac.

17caterpillars1mouse · 14/09/2020 15:25

I think Dylan is lovely name, though I do personally prefer it spelt Dillon.

Varjakpaw · 14/09/2020 15:27

All the Dylans’ I know are lovely, sociable and funny. I also think it goes really well with Isaac.

EmbarrassedUser · 14/09/2020 15:30

It’s a bit meh if you ask me. How about Nathan, Nathanial, Toby or Lucas. All faves of mine.

vanillandhoney · 14/09/2020 15:38

I love the name Dylan. It's our number one name if we have a boy.
