From the new English rules published 20 minutes before they came into force

^ a person participates in a gathering as a member of a qualifying group only if they are part of a qualifying group and, whilst participating in the gathering, they do not—
(i) become a member of any other group of persons participating in the gathering (whether or not that group is a “qualifying group”), or
(ii) otherwise mingle with any person who is participating in the gathering but is^

I’ve just looked up ‘mouse mingle’

Mingling is definitely what happens at cocktail parties. With a glass of something fizzy or a G&T.

If this is official guidance, it reminds of the rule we had at school... No Canoodling.

Frownette · 14/09/2020 09:37

Canoodling is a good word. Haven't heard that for yonks.

Mysterian · 14/09/2020 09:50

I though of chocolate too. You can't have a single Mingle.

GolightlyMrsGolightly · 14/09/2020 09:57

canoodling s definitely a step beyond mingling.....

in fact it probably goes mingling....making eyes....canoodling

We say 'giving the glad eye' for making eyes.

Mingling - glad eye - canoodling - Bob's your uncle.

GolightlyMrsGolightly · 14/09/2020 11:04

@DollyScrobbler well I rather hope Bob isn't your uncle...if you know what I mean.

Unless it's 'Uncle' Bob from the golf club, with a wandering eye, a dishevelled collar and a slight whiff of gin. You know, the one your mum, said 'avoid'.

Aren't we leading on to the rules in a public swimming baths??

It will be 'no heavy petting' next...Sad

Frownette · 14/09/2020 12:44

If you do that behind a bush you'll get away with it.

Or did you mean you can't show love and affection to your hamsters or other pets?

GoatsInBoats · 14/09/2020 12:47

I decided to go a shade mad, it being the Smoked Meat Purveyors' Buffet and Mingle at the weekend.

I read this title as "what does minge mean to you" Blush

(And the answer is that it's what you say when someone at the swimming pool forgets their bikini bottoms Wink who was that btw? Someone must remember)

GolightlyMrsGolightly · 14/09/2020 13:18

'Your minge!" Happy more innocent days.

I think I might mingle in Marks and Spencer this evening. Not shop alone, just sidle past people and make small talk and block aisles.

That reminds me of the unfortunate tankini many years ago at infant swimming lessons. Nice multi-coloured top half, nude bottoms. Add in the distortion of looking through pool water and it was a very disconcerting, distracting effect...

Mingle is when the Nintendo Wii characters congregate on demand after a whistle blow.

Is mingling the posh form of hobnobbing?

GolightlyMrsGolightly · 14/09/2020 15:55

I'd have put hobnobbing as posher than mingling...but it is a very close call.
