Do I send my son with a cough 😬

He stayed home Friday bunged up full of cold which has developed into a cough as the mucus has loosened. No temperature or loss of taste, he feels fine just has the annoy tickly cough you get after a cold especially first thing in the morning. But it always sounds worse first thing but he will probably perk up later!!

@RepeatSwan

The other worry is we are losing any control, because if we can't get tests, we don't know where covid is spreading.

We can't avoid a second lockdown if they don't get a grip Sad

This is a real worry, particularly as two positive tests within a school bubble triggers further measures like quarantining the entire bubble. If children can't get tested then there are no positive tests to trigger quarantine or school closures.

Makes you wonder if that isn't what the government actually intend.

Dickorydockwhatthe · 14/09/2020 18:23

I did send him to school having kept him off Friday as he was unwell and full of cold. By Sunday he seemed more or less fine and well in himself but typically coughing first thing but fine from mid morning onwards.
Firstly everyone saying you should get a test because of the cough, well there's no tests because that's what everyone is doing at the slightest symptom. So it doesn't help control the spread because people are being forced to take testswhen it's more then likely a cold and they should just stay home and keep an eye on the symptoms. Chances are by the time they are tested and recieved results they have probably already effected those who are likely to get it. The whole thing is a mess.

Did school say anything?

COVID tends to start with the cough or temp.

A cold developing into a cough is normal!

Thanks to today's lovely weather my hay fever came back with avengence today.

I've been coughing loads. But it's my usually tickle throat cough and don't need a test.

ChronicCovid · 14/09/2020 19:41

We've all had covid. For balance, mine started with chest pressure and breathlessness. My husband started with breathlessness. My 7-year old daughter started with a sore throat and wheeziness and my 6 year old started with a sore throat and headache.

My husband was fine in 2 days, my daughter was mildly ill for 3 weeks and now has asthma, my son was very ill for 6 weeks and took another 6 to lose his cough and fatigue, and I'm approaching 6 months with permanent lung problems.

Dickorydockwhatthe · 14/09/2020 20:03

School didn't say anything. He probably held in his cough like most of do lately anyway. He just sounded really bad first thing. It just goes to show though the symptoms seem to vary person to person there's no way of knowing 🙁. Maybe we just need to shield those most vulnerable again, there's no getting away from this.

So I have finally managed to book a test for DD who clearly has nothing more than a cold - test site fucking hours away Angry

BexR · 14/09/2020 21:08

Bloody hell @ChronicCovid that just shows how random the effects are. I'm sorry to hear that your family is suffering from some long term issues.

Pluckedpencil · 14/09/2020 21:35

I don't know the UK guidance but in Italy we have been told if you are symptomatic, any cough or cold of any kind, then you should isolate until the symptoms have cleared.
If the doctor then says you need a test, then you also follow the covid procedures for quarantine.

I know it is unbearably frustrating that kids with a cold need to be off and or tested. But how the fuck are we going to keep going if they don't? I've just spent 5 days isolating with my dds (I'm a teacher) because one bought a cold home. We were correctly asked to test after both developed a hacking cough. Thankfully they came back negative (a shambles that the testing situation is the way it is. Media should be ashamed of themselves for not making this headline news).

But the selfish pp on here who won't test her DC and even LIE to the school that a she has and that it was negative. Words fail me. You utterly selfish..... I tested both young DC (one actually giggled at the nose swab). This hysteria over the 'invasive' test is ludicrous. Yes, it not the nicest 20 secs. But let's put it in perspective. I have to give my dd injections daily. I inject myself numerous times a day and have done for 20+ years. This makes me clinically vulnerable. I am teaching your child. I am appalled at your disregard to others and how dare you say this makes you a better parent. It makes you the worst kind of parent and pretty shit human being.

OP, I'm glad your DC is feeling better. He obviously wasn't coughing much at all at school. I coughed in the corridor today and I had about 50 teenagers shoot round and stare, clearly on edge. I've got my negative test and been wearing a mask so as not to pass it on.

*brought....she may have paid for it Wink. I feel like I have!

Gulsink · 14/09/2020 21:56

Morals permitting, enter a Scottish postcode to get a QR code and turn up at your local test centre.

flumpster123 · 15/09/2020 07:40

Roughly how long are people waiting for the results? Our test is at 11.30 this morning

Aragog · 15/09/2020 08:33

My results took 66 hours to come through from the time of testing. Sheffield walk in test centre.

JustSaying101 · 15/09/2020 09:52

Wtf?! What a complete shambles...
InnisGunn · 15/09/2020 10:33

Got our results back last night after about 50 hours. I vowed to stop slagging off Hancock, at least for one day...Negative, thankfully Grin

flumpster123 · 16/09/2020 17:33

Now 30 hours since our test...

DH going spare at the work piling up and I've had to cancel another shift
DC meanwhile relishing yet more time off school.

Wargghhhh · 16/09/2020 17:42

Negative test results here, back in about 30 hours so very relieved.

Stompythedinosaur · 16/09/2020 17:46

Really shocked that school are allowing kids in with a cough. The NHS guidelines are clear - three incidents of coughing over 24 hours or coughing a lot in an hour and they should be isolated and get a test.

I'm really cross with the parents who sent in their coughing dc in my dc's bubble. They got sent home, but not before infecting my dc, leading to a 3 hour trip for tests and several days off work and school.

It is very selfish not to isolate when you or your kids have covid symptoms.

DiddlySquatty · 17/09/2020 08:38

Sorry but when my dc has a cough, which is obviously related to a cold, and no temperature. I keep them off school til their better but wouldn’t be seeking a test. This is partly why the testing system is collapsing!
And did they ‘infect you’ with covid? Or a cold....

Stompythedinosaur · 17/09/2020 09:07

Having a temperature is less common for kids than adults with Covid, so shouldn't be seen as the deciding factor.

I hope those of you with symptomatic dc who don't want a test are isolating the whole household for 14 days.

It is very clear that the infection rate is skyrocketing. We all need to follow the rules.

SqidgeBum · 17/09/2020 09:20

Ye well we were being told 2 weeks ago when schools opened that children basically dont spread the virus, so I PPE is needed by teachers etc. So what is it? Do kids spread it or not? They seem ok to have kids on buses, trains, in classrooms with 30 other kids, seeing 6 different teachers a day, because kids (according to BJ) have minimal chance of catching or spreading it. But people are now saying parents should be super cautious and if they are not then it will easily spread? Bit contradictory.

TheGrayChapter · 17/09/2020 09:51

My dc and half of the class all have a cold...no temp, no cough just full of snot.

School have been fine about it all (but they seem to be taking a more relaxed approach than others, one friend whole class has been asked to test and isolate, as one child has one symptom)

If they ask for a test we will test (not likely to get one as the nearest test site is over 100 miles away and no postal ones available)

Scary the state of things again! I’m utterly discouraged by the bloody government...all seems a half hearted attempt and complete and utter piss take.

Pheobeasy · 17/09/2020 10:19

Well it depends on the symptoms, if they aren't covid symptoms then no, it's not a case of wanting a test it's a case of not needing one.

Stompythedinosaur · 17/09/2020 10:35

Of course people only need a test if they have covid symptoms. But there are pps talking about ignoring coughs as if they aren't a covid symptom, when they clearly are.
