Hi

I have the straightest hair know to all of mankind, my perm in the 90’s only lasted about 3 weeks. I always just tided it back in a pony, no fancy hair styles here. The way l got to have curly hair for my wedding was because it was someone else’s.

Dd 4 has the curl’s that look super cute when they look nice, which is usually before bedtime. I have you tubed how to care for curly hair, how to plait and practised on a dolls head and l just can’t do it.

Are there any miracle products out there that might help me control it. I hate when it goes all fuzzy.

Check out the Curly girl method. I follow it to a certain extent. Worth a look to give a rough idea

Gulsink · 13/09/2020 20:43

Basically, wash hair with conditioner not shampoo. Don't brush with anything other than your fingers (found fingers work better than an afro comb). And find an oil/serum/leave in conditioner which works well on her hair type.
(That's a simplified curly girl method which worked for our daughters blonde curly hair.)

I found this website helpful: curlygirlapproveduk.com/

If you’re on Facebook have a look at the curly girl groups on there, there are lots of people in your position! Unfortunately there isn’t one miracle product but with a bit of guidance and trial and error you should be able to find something that works. A leave in conditioner is likely to be helpful.

Detangling spray and a tangle teezer

Gulsink · 13/09/2020 20:47

You might need to experiment a bit. Some hair looks greasy with some oils and frizzy with others, and some conditioners seem too heavy and weigh the curls down too much.

Gulsink · 13/09/2020 20:49

Definitely NOT a tangle teezer.

Sickoffamilydrama · 13/09/2020 20:50

I tired Earhart everyone had said about curly girl method, I do a modified curly girl on that I still use shampoo just no SLS /parabens then lots of conditioner and leave in.

Foldinthecheese · 13/09/2020 20:50

My little girl is 20 months and has lovely curls. I’m not ready to commit to the CG method, just because her hair still gets grubby with food and general mess. I wash her hair every other day and use a tangle teaser brush to comb through spray conditioner once she’s out of the bath. I use Double Bubble or Double Trouble or something like that...got it at Tesco. The conditioner has made a huge difference, and if it’s frizzy in the morning I just get it wet and use the tangle teaser again, which seems to re-activate the curls.

RedRumTheHorse · 13/09/2020 20:50

If you have more time have a look at naturallycurly.com

One trick is to use a spray bottle of leave-in conditioner/your own concoction in the morning. Dampen her hair, comb it with a wide-tooth comb and apply products. Shower combs have wider teeth than afro combs, but some people use Denman brushes or tangle teasers.

What combs/brushs and products you need depends completely on her individual hair, and is a bit of trial and error. This is why you should try and work out the basics of her hair type e.g. curl pattern, density, strand width before using anything.

ruddynorah · 13/09/2020 20:51

Christ not a tangle teezer.

A wide tooth comb or fingers only. And only when hair is wet. Run a product through, the best are from afro hair shops, then twirl the hair in sections around your hair to shape the curl then leave to dry naturally.

Sickoffamilydrama · 13/09/2020 20:54

Well I don't know how that first sentence got completely changed I blame Gremlins 😉

BanditsBum · 13/09/2020 20:56

DD(4) has beautiful curls, to care for them we:

Only wash with shampoo once per week (use palmers olive oil shampoo).
On other nights we just use warm water.
Leave inspray conditioner (also palmers) is a must for us.
Make sure she has regular trims.
A bit of light curl serum at the ends if needed.

AMemeByAnyOtherName · 13/09/2020 22:46

Which curl type does she have? It's so much easier to find products once you identify that. Charts attached (hopefully)

My dd has curly hair. Curly girl method didn't work for us. Spray in conditioner or water sprayed, then comb with a wide-toothed comb makes her hair have lovely curls and ringlets.
Asda coconut kids shampoo and conditioner is for curly hair and really helps.

Solongtoshort · 14/09/2020 00:20

Wow thank you all l didn’t know about the curly girl method, l will look. We use a wide tooth comb, l know not to use a tangle tease from experience, she does have regular trims @AMemeByAnyOtherName her curl is 3a, l am going to try the Asda coconut shampoo if it’s for curly hair and l hadn’t thought of leave in conditioner.

Fingers crossed my mornings aren’t going to be so stressed.

My hair is curly . I use products from Curlsmith to style and cantu shampoo and conditioner . I did try curly girl which does work but for me I didn’t like the feel of my hair doing that .

Wigglegiggle0520 · 14/09/2020 07:13

I have a curly DD. We follow the curly girl method which says you can use a denman brush. We have to as after sleeping her hair gets very knotty even if it’s in a plait.
It’s ‘washed’ once a week with as I am co wash or a curly girl friendly conditioner. And then more conditioner put in.
In the mornings I wet it with a spray bottle of water and then again put conditioner through it to soften it. I used to mix water and conditioner in the spray bottle to make it easier.
Her hair is in lovely condition and it’s all very cheap. You can get the XHC I think it is conditioners in savers and Poundland for £1.
I have never used oils or serums on her hair at all.
