Worried about DD’s arm. Can someone talk me down?

She’s almost six.

She has a bruise on her outer forearm. It started off at the beginning of the week quite light and about the size of a 5p coin and I didn’t think much of it. Over the last few days it has grown and today it’s about the size of a 10p piece and a lot darker. It also has a raised centre which is a paler colour.

I took her to the pharmacy today to ask if it was maybe a bite or something. The pharmacist I thought was a little taken aback when she saw it. Didn’t know what it was but took a photo and said bring her back on Monday to compare. But to be honest if it’s the same or worse I’ll be going to the GP.

She’s fine in herself. No temperature etc. Says the bruise isn’t sore unless she presses it. I am really worried about it though. I don’t really know why. I think it’s just that it’s not healing and I’m worried about infection/sepsis or leukaemia? But accept I can be a little over anxious about this stuff.

She has no idea how it happened. I asked her when it first appeared and she was like “🤷🏻‍♀️ Dunno didn’t know it was there”. She runs about, plays games etc at school so probably just bumped herself doing that.

Any thoughts?

I'd take her to the GP. Please try not to worry.

Could she just have re bumped the same bruise?

I'm extraordinarily clumsy and have basically permanent bruises that almost heal, then I knock them again and they come back twice the size, and angry and purple looking.

Keeping a watchful eye out though isn't a bad idea. It's unlikely to be anything as sinister as leukaemia but worth keeping a close look just in case and yes gp on Monday if it's not looking any better

Could it be ringworm?

You are worried about a bruise that is a 10p? Someone has said ring 111? It’s a bruise, not an issue.

Bruises change colour and size in the course of their lifespan. I really, really don’t think you need to worry. I am sure in a week or two it will be gone!

Rita it has grown in size and now has a raised centre. Why shouldn't she be concerned? The pharmacist has taken a photo of it, not said go away it is just a bruise.

Ruby Can you draw a biro line around it just so you can see if it gets any bigger?

Could it be a tick bite?

I think it’s almost certainly fine but you can take her to your GP on Monday if you’re still concerned. I wouldn’t bother with the pharmacist as there’s not much they could give her

It yes I’d take photos and measure it just so you can check if it’s growing etc

It doesn’t look like ringworm. It’s funny I googled ring shaped bruise and there are a few pics that are identical and they are just bruises so that’s put my mind at rest slightly. But I’ll be taking her to the GP on Monday because I’ve also frightened myself with sepsis/Lyme disease etc

It looks like this. Only it’s darker and the middle isn’t quite so large.

Bruuses get worse aNd bigger over few days before getting better.
Centre can look paler or different.
If she well in herself and it s one single bruise you could wait a few days to monitor. Then if it doesnt improve see gp.

A bruise starting out pale and then becoming more pronounced, before changing colour a few times and fading away is normal. So is some swelling if you bashed yourself. They don't instantly appear at full vibrancy the moment you injure yourself.

Struggling to see how you got to sepsis from a normal bruise cycle and no other symptoms.

How would she got herself hard enough to have such a big dark bruise and not know how she’s done it though?

Because if it was a bite she would have described a bite. She describes a bruise in an healthy child- why would you go to a go To a GP for a bruise in a well child. That is actually quite bizarre. Kids gets bruised all the time, why worry.

I called 111 about a bruise just like this last week under my arm. I'm on a month worth's of antibiotics in case it was a tick bite, which pretty sure it must have been.

Because kids move and don’t feel the pain when they are having loads of fun.

I very often have bruises that I can’t explain , that’s fairly normal I would think .

Does it look like a bruise or a bite?

I don’t know. Neither did the pharmacist.

Can you go to an out of hours surgery tomorrow? To put your mind at rest? It sounds like the anxiety you are experiencing with your dd having a bruise is a bigger issue tha the bruise. Keep and eye on it and take a deep breath. You are doing everything you can.

My kids legs are covered in bruises. Never cries, doesn’t know how she got them, happy as larry. I was same.
