Smear, hpv positive, monogamous relationship, condoms?

Nc as mortified.

Just had results of my smear, came back hpv positive but no abnormal cells. Google tells me hpv can be present but dormant for decades (I did have genital warts 25 years ago) so how do i (do I need to?) go about sex? Does my partner have it, did I give it to him? Do we need to use condoms now or is that shutting the stable door? He had a vasectomy 2 years ago and AFAIK no extra 'marital' affairs on each side. NHS website doesn't give me this info, nor does any effing online std info site, gp surgery closed, has anyone got any official medical advice?
(obviously if he has been playing away I'll ltb, but that's not the advice I need atm) Thanks

I’d abstain until I talk to my G.P. Condoms don’t protect you from HPV.
You’ll need to tell him, as he may want to see his G.P.

I think he will probably have it too so condoms pointless. I had HPV a few years ago - all clear at last smear. It rather put me off sex with DP anyway but I think it’s so so common that it would be okay to have sex with you DP?

I spoke to the sexual health helpline (eventually). The advisor said that whilst it is classed as an sti - as in it's contracted through sexual contact- it's not one of those STIs. Most sexually active people will have had it, and it can lay dormant for decades, just that my body was having an 'active case' when I had my smear. It doesn't affect men, there isn't a test for men, and there is no cure for it - like a cold virus or a verruca, your body just has to fight it out. No need for barrier contraception, as if I've got it, he will too. I did ask if he should tell a future partner and she said because it wasn't that sort of STI not to bother Hmm

80% of people carry HPV
very few give you a normal cells.

I should know as I am one of the few. I recently found out I had CIN3 severe cell changes which turned into early cancer

Suzi888 · 12/09/2020 19:20

Yes @ItchyScratch it’s a possible cancer indicator for men and women, so I’d definitely speak to a GP and tell DP

Yeah, we've had The Talk, got a repeat smear next year. Thanks all.
