Weed killer for artificial grass

LST · 12/09/2020 10:38

Can anyone recommend a good weedkiller for artificial grass and slabs / slate areas of my garden. I moved into the house in Feb and the grass has been down a few years so there are a few (not many at all, but I don't want it to get worse) weeds poking through the lawn at different points. Also, the front is slated and the same. Not loads, but i want to stop them in their tracks! Thanks!

I knew it was boring 🙈

I'm waiting for a reply too...

@forrestgreen. I think I've won the award for the most boring and lonely thread haha!

I find boiling water works best.... I’ve tried weed killer first and it’s been pretty useless. Just get out there with your kettle, cheap and easy.

LST · 12/09/2020 16:18

@Toodleloo does that kill them at the root or just scorch them and then they grow back? Its a friendlier way of doing it I suppose!

Probably any of the handsprays - but I think weed killer loses its effectiveness on soil. Not sure if it would lose it if sprayed on plastic. So just spray the plant not the plastic. And keep DCs away. There is a gardening section on mn.

LST · 12/09/2020 16:22

@straven123 I have tried weedol, but they just keep coming back in the same spot. I want something that would really kill them dead rather than temporary iyswim

Mmm. I think it’s because it’s a question that a lot of people will struggle to answer politely TBH OP. I looked when you first posted and couldn’t face it.

Artificial grass and paving are both awful for the environment see. Weedkiller is also (obviously) an environmental nightmare. It’s hard to know what too say as most gardeners would do anything avoid at least two of the three.

A flamethrower weeder would work well on the paving but destroy the “grass”. At a guess you’d need to have the “grass” lifted and a new weed membrane put down.

Might you consider allowing just a little life in a wee corner of your outside space?

LST · 12/09/2020 16:25

@owl I was waiting for you! Here have a Biscuit

I have plenty of life in my garden thank you very much. But as a disabled person I find having a lawn really fucking hard work. Thanks for your concern 😘

I wouldn't do boiling water on the grass I'd be worried it'd melt

Reedwarbler · 12/09/2020 22:01

Salt? Sprinkled liberally over the weed may work. Have you just tried pulling them up? Your artificial grass may need relaying though if lots of weeds are breaking through.

Crockof · 12/09/2020 22:11

Agree salt. It won't stop it forever because the weeds are growing through a crack in the artificial grass but will kill the current plant without poisoning the environment. Plus it's cheap.

Aquamarine1029 · 12/09/2020 22:15

Op, mix heavy salted water, vinegar, and a bit of washing up liquid in a spray bottle. Spray the weeds early in the day so they will be in the sunlight for a decent period, and soon they will be gone. They should be brown and shrinking by the end of the afternoon.

JoanJosephJim · 12/09/2020 22:26

@LST we also have an artificial lawn in the back garden mainly so that Dh can actually sit out there and enjoy it. He suffers from severe hayfever from grass seed and had to watch the children playing from inside the house if the grass had recently been cut. Sad

I use Weedoll root kill plus, it is a concentrate that you dilute and apply with a watering can. I did have one persistent little bugger of a weed that was mounding up growing underneath the grass so rather than my usual once every 3 months I did one patch monthly. Never had an issue since. I have had my artificial lawn over 4 years, we absolutely love it.

And to compensate for the artificial grass (that the birds sunbathe on) we have 2 front gardens and a side garden, none of which are grassed but are planted up instead again due to the hayfever. My sons still wanted to play football, hence the artificial grass.

Itstime1 · 12/09/2020 22:41

I had artificial grass installed last year in the back and around the whole side of house (husband hates cutting grass so we got rid of it all). We’ve tried a few and honestly? The best for us was salt water with distilled vinegar and a little bit of washing up liquid! Works straight away and after 2-3 goes nothing has grown since! Worth a try

Itstime1 · 12/09/2020 22:41

I didn’t see this when I posted so apologies for repeating it!

The washing up liquid in the salt and vinegar solution helps it to cling to the leaves of the weeds. It really does work. You just need to make sure you use it on a sunny day.

Fluffycloudland77 · 13/09/2020 08:21

Cooking salt from Morrison’s.

TippledPink · 13/09/2020 08:24

The weeds shouldn't be growing through the artificial grass as there should be a protective barrier to stop this, they will be what lands onto the grass and grows. When we get weeds on ours we just pull them gently and the whole thing comes out as it is only sitting on to of the artificial grass.

goingtotown · 13/09/2020 08:55

I kill weeds on my paths & drive using a cup full of salt dissolved in a watering can.

Elieza · 13/09/2020 09:57

Thanks @Aquamarine1029 good to know. I didn’t realise the sun was key too. Let’s hope the good weather we are supposedly getting next week provides the opportunity to try it.

Random other point in case anyone is interested. I’ve just bought something called Wet And Forget on QVC U.K. the shopping channel. £50 delivered.

It’s got a spray for spraying the moss on the roof using your regular hosepipe. (Although I will have to stand up a ladder to get high enough to use) as it’s supposed to be really good.
They used it on the Sydney opera house roof to keep the moss off.
It takes the green tinge off paths and fences, patio furniture etc. Only downside is that it is a weed killer and you need to cover plants it may accidentally splatter in as it will kill them too.
I wouldn’t normally use a weed killer, preferring natural methods, but the roof is too high and I’m fed up with the constant peck peck peck from the birds every morning as soon as it is daylight. I think bugs live in the moss that they are trying to eat.
Anyway I will be using in my roof only in the autumn once I have cut back everything for winter in a dry weekend in the hope it works.

LST · 13/09/2020 13:37

Thank you all! I am definitely going to try the salt!
