How would your secondary school aged child feel about...

You working in their school office?

A job has just come up at our local secondary which would be absolutely perfect. Mostly term time, my area of previous work experience, walking distance from home and the primary school my younger children are at. BUT, it’s the school we are hoping to send dd1 to in September, would this be total social death?

For context, we have moved around a lot and dd is on her fourth primary school, and does not speak with the local accent which she gets occasional stick for. I’m keen not to cause additional challenges.

I appreciate I may not get it, I expect competition would be considerable, but would you apply?

mortified.

But that is my kids, not all would feel the same way.
easier if it is in th eoffice I think, rather than teaching/TA

The dc at my DD's school would rarely see the office staff. Our school is small and two of the ladies are at a desk but as all staff are called Miss or Sir I bet neither of my dc know their names! There are also office staff who are never seen! There is finance and attendance for example.

I’d apply. My dd started at secondary this year and until Covid I was working there, I do go in occasionally but mainly work at home. Secondary isn’t like primary which is much smaller. I’d apply. It’ll be fine.

Definitely apply. I work in a school office and love it!

Re your question though, I worked at the same school as my dds (not in the office) and it didn't cause them any issues at all. They barely noticed me tbh as they were too busy with their own school life.

Thanks all, that’s very reassuring!

Better go and dig out my CV...

Apply.

My mother was my head teacher - everyone knew and I survived.
Best friend - her mum was head of year - she survived.
Other classmates had sympathy for us!
