College level student financing muddle any experts?

Nc but a regular

Dc about to start further education college to get A-levels after leaving school before they had done these (long story not really important but wasn’t their fault)

They’re 19, 20 next spring which means they seem to fall through the cracks in terms of getting financial support.

Apparently can’t get advanced learner loan because it’s first time doing a levels and they’re under 20.

But this means they also can’t get other help.

Living with dad but except for basics of food and lodging he seems unwilling to help otherwise. It’s a very tense relationship, cos there was no contact for several years (dads doing)

Dc has a part time job which doesn’t pay much and is looking for other work but of course they need time to study too.

But they need money for transport, college stuff etc too

I am helping where I can but I don’t have a huge income myself.

It seems to be a case like I said of falling through the cracks cos if dc were 20 or older or a parent or not living with dad they’d get other help.

I understand why that is but they’re stuck and worried and I’m trying to find out where we might be going wrong or if maybe they’ve been given wrong information?

Loads online for university level students but very difficult to find stuff for college level.

Anyone been through this or works in this area and can help?

Desperate bump

We’ve been trying all week to find help and failed nobody seems to know all aspects of benefits and other funds students at this level can access.

I am no expert. However has he considered an Access course? I teach Access and have 19/20 yr old students with advanced learner loans. Access courses are level 3 (same as A level and BTEC) - one year fast track to university. However the loan just pays for the course fees. He will need to be quick as colleges are already into the third week of teaching - it may be too late to join A level - Access tends to start later (we started this week).

Apologies - just seen it is DCs 19 and 20. However the advise is the same. Access will be easier to get funding because it is one year. Unfortunately once you turn 19 education (unless you need to get GCSE maths and english) is no longer free. Once in college the student support team may advise about benefits.
