Baby nap help

DS (4 months) is breastfed (in case it's relevant) and sleeps like a dream at night - goes down at 7:30 and often sleeps 10-12 hours straight, occasionally will wake once to feed.

However, he just will not nap for a decent amount in the day. He gets tired and cranky so I know he needs it, but I just cannot get him to sleep longer than 30m in the daytime. I've tried nap cues like a book or song, using blackout blinds (like we do at night), making sure he has a full tummy, feeding to sleep/not feeding to sleep. He just cannot put himself back to sleep in the daytime, although obviously can do it fine at night.

Anyone have any tips?!

Anyone able to help? Only managed several short naps of 10-30 mins today...

Would he sleep for longer on you?

Mine is six months and I have only recently started being able to put her down for daytime naps. Before then she would only stay awake of she slept on me. This may be related to the fact we co-sleep so she's not used to sleeping alone, but we still do sleep together at night and, as I say, she's fine being left now during the day. I'll sometimes leave her star light on (more to keep her happy when she wakes) but more often than not I don't.

I would have been fine with my baby not napping at that age if they were sleeping 12 straight hours a night , that’s amazing

Can you not just pop baby in a bouncer seat while you potter about
Does baby not sleep in Pram or car when you go out ?

I know - I have wondered whether he even needs to nap much at all in the day given how well he sleeps at night, but he clearly does. He gets super cranky and more and more agitated the longer he's awake. He won't sleep on me really - he'll doze for a short time once he's fed but again wakes up after about 10 mins. I'd be happy with the catnaps if I felt like they were enough to keep him happy and refreshed, but they just don't seem like they are IYKWIM. He does sometimes sleep in the pram though - perhaps I could do that for one of his naps at least.

Do you have the Huckleberry app? We've found this really useful for helping guide nap times etc.

Can you do naps in a sling?

MyNameHasBeenTaken · 10/09/2020 21:33

Where do you put him for naps?
Some babies like to nap in their cots.
Mine didnt!
Mine would sleep in car, pram, on me, sofa, my bed, the beach , the garden.... literally anywhere not her cot during the day.
But she slept really well in cot at night.

Keep persevering

Thanks - haven't heard of Huckleberry, will take a look. I could try naps in the sling, I guess I've been persevering with the cot because he sleeps so well in it at night that I'm just a bit confused as to why he won't in the day! Good to know he's not alone though, myname. He fell fast asleep in his bouncer when DH turned his back to run his bath this evening, so I think he might be cut from the same cloth as your DD!

It’s fine at that age for them to nap in Pram if our walking as they are still in the lie flat position in a mattress usually.

Autumn winter walks are lovely 😊

My eldest two had all their daily naps in Pram
Third DC was much more routine , napped in cot at set times

My baby is just turning 4 months. I find my lo goes roughly 2 hours between naps. Naps don't last long now but sometimes has a longer nap in the afternoon and is ready for bed usually between 5.30pm and 6.30pm.
It's totally normal to take several short naps at this age and as they get a bit older will probably solidify naps in to 2 longer naps or maybe even 1 nap!
