Help! DD has croup! Do we need to isolate?

DD age 4, who just started school this week, seems to have croup. My older DD suffered from recurrent croup so I’m pretty in the know on what to do (prop her up etc). Although, on what I thought was my older DD’s hundredth time having croup, the GP listened to my voice recording of her from the previous night and told me that it wasn’t croup that time but viral wheeze. She has now developed asthma.

DD2’s cough definitely sounds like croup but I suppose I could be wrong and it could be viral wheeze.

My question is, do we all have to isolate if DD has a croup type cough that only comes on at night? Or do I just need to keep her home from school until the cough passes?

Any help much appreciated. Thanks :)

Headteacher here.
Not symptoms of coronavirus so treat as a usual illness. Back to school ASAP!

Honeyhoneyy · 10/09/2020 03:28

Thank you so much for replying @ToadCandle.

If she is well enough in the morning, should I send her in? She’s only doing 2.5 hours a day just now and she’s not particularly unwell if that makes sense. It’s just the cough which I know will be only a night time thing?

@ToadCandle but coughing is a sign of coronavirus and croup like cough is persistent. My daughter in March (2) had a croup like cough at night at the GP stated that it sounds like COVID. She had croup as a baby so I was sure that it sounded similar. She wasn't tested as at the time only hospital addition were tested, however, we were told to self isolate. I would suggest to contact GP.

I agree it's not Covid symptoms as your GP has said its a viral wheeze. Totally different than a new continuos cough. I'd say schools ok if she feels ok.

bethebestofyou · 10/09/2020 04:02

@Torvean32 but as far as I can see this refers to the OP other daughter. 'Although, on what I thought was my older DD’s hundredth time having croup, the GP listened to my voice recording of her from the previous night and told me that it wasn’t croup that time but viral wheeze. She has now developed asthma.' The younger daughter has a croup like coughing.

Thanks for all the replies. As soon as she’s been propped up, she’s completely stopped coughing. I’d guess that reinforces the fact it most likely is croup.

I’ve just no idea what to do about school today xx

It’s not a new continuous cough though is it? It’s not continuous if it only happens at night when lying down.

bethebestofyou · 10/09/2020 07:00

As far as I was explained it is 3 coughs episodes in 24h. It doesn't have to be day. www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/symptoms/

Loftyloft · 10/09/2020 07:01

He was never tested so no idea, but my eldest had bad croup in March (and wheeze in the day) which we though may be coronavirus. He also had diarrhea, stomach pain but no other symptoms. and both me and DH were in bed for a few days feeling fluey (No cough/temp). We isolated anyway (it was before the lockdown).

So it may, may not have been coronavirus.

Apparently 80% of croup cases are caused by a coronavirus (not specifically covid, but that group of viruses).

NorfolkEnchance · 10/09/2020 07:14

Mine had croup first day of school. Was told by 111 and GP to test, isolate until results came back and then back to school as normal.

claireymrsd · 10/09/2020 07:20

I'd say it's a cough and that's one of the covid symptoms so you should test and self isolate until you get the results

zigzagbetty · 10/09/2020 07:22

Sorry to through a spanner in the works, my little girl had a croup type cough back in late March, took her to a and e and were told yes its croup and no need to isolate, 4 days later I had corona symptoms them my OH did. Doctor later said her cough was probably viral and she had passed to us. But she hadn't had croup since she was a baby so could be different to your situation.
I would isolate though.

Throw! Autocorrect fail

Seeline · 10/09/2020 07:26

It's a new cough. I think you should test and isolate until results are known. Sorry.

cindersrella · 10/09/2020 07:30

I am having this problem. My daughter, back to school, mixing with others and germs, she is asthmatic. She has he a runny nose since Friday (prefix lay went back to school on the previous wed. Last night coughing whilst in bed. This morning seems fine.

My DS has a croupy cough after his first couple of days back last week so I sent him to school. Then it turned in to a dry persistent cough so he’s been off since yesterday. We are awaiting test results from one we had yesterday afternoon. I’m fairly certain he doesn’t have Covid but I’d rather send him back with a clear conscience!

ChateauMargaux · 10/09/2020 07:36

Our school advises that we should stay at home until child has been clear of symptoms for 24 hours. This allows time for other symptoms to develop or not.

tiredanddangerous · 10/09/2020 07:38

I would send her. Be prepared to have to collect her again if she coughs at school though!

Quartz2208 · 10/09/2020 07:43

You need to get tested - cough and breathless are symptoms (and common ones)

FenellaMaxwell · 10/09/2020 07:48

You can’t send her to school, no. Book a test and then only take her back to school once croup is confirmed via a negative Covid test.

Honeyhoneyy · 10/09/2020 07:50

Can I send my older DD to school?

OP posts:
IggyAce · 10/09/2020 07:50

I would isolate and arrange a test, because it’s a new cough. By ds developed a cough I was 90% sure it was his asthma cough but because of Covid and I had returned to work in a school I didn’t want to risk I was wrong.

Princessdebthe1st · 10/09/2020 07:50

Children often present slightly differently with Covid. This is a new cough, yes it is quite possibly croup but you do not know that. If it was me I would isolate until I had got test results. At the very least speak to the school before you send her in and see what they say. If it did turn out to be Covid, how would you feel about having exposed her classmates and teacher to it when it could have been avoided?

Quartz2208 · 10/09/2020 07:52

Nope.

It is an absolute pain and they do need to sort it. But DS just had a cough due to a cold. 2 days off and we were lucky that we got tested day 1 and results day 2.

The fact that it is a croup like cough you definitely do. To me the COVID cough is croup like
