Do you think it would be better if we went back to news programmes three times a day?

If you're old enough, you'll remember the news was on at midday, 6pm and 9pm only.

24hr rolling news with all those hours to fill with speculation, so called experts, over exposure, whipping up stories/fervour etc etc.

If we went back to an hour of news, three times a day, there may be more balanced stories of important issues. They would have to select their stories and contributors more carefully.

Yes! Sooo not interested in endless vox pops to fill time. Then again, not sure how many people still get their news from TV ...

SomewhereEast · 08/09/2020 19:33

Yes! And no more vox pops. I really don't give a shit what Sandra from Chelmsford thinks about Brexit or Covid or whatever

Mayswear · 08/09/2020 19:55

Totally agree. Plus Internet turned off on Sundays or something. There's waaaayyyy too much Internet. Especially Twitter which should just be burnt to actual death.

Yes i agree

Sycamoretrees · 08/09/2020 20:05

Completely agree!

Oly4 · 08/09/2020 20:06

No I love to switch on the news at any point and catch up

ItWorriesMeThisKindofThing · 08/09/2020 20:07

Unfortunately Twitter would still be 24 hrs and the speculation etc would be far worse

clopper · 08/09/2020 20:08

Yes definitely

WanderingMilly · 08/09/2020 20:23

Noooo, I love 24 hour news!! I dislike so many programmes that I only watch news and documentaries anyway. When 24 hour news became a thing I was in heaven. When I'm sick of BBC 24 I turn to Sky news and even RT or Al Jazeera, sometimes at night I put on the parliamentary stuff and it hums on (drones on?!) while I doze. The whole point of it is the discussion and speculation...…..

(OK, yes, I'm on my own and need to get a life and all that.....)

waltzingparrot · 08/09/2020 20:24

@Oly4 Well you could watch the latest news programme on catch up Grin

I don’t watch the news. I don’t have time. Actually I don’t even watch tv except Friday and Saturday evenings with dh. I get my news from the internet. But fair enough because my crazy right wing nut job family members could probably do with less of a 24 hour news cycle.

ShamPayne · 08/09/2020 20:27

Yes. My pet hate is watching one journalist interviewing another - just pointless waffle to fill time.

LolaSmiles · 08/09/2020 20:31

If not 3 times a day, I'd be happy with a breakfast news, lunch, 6pm and 9/10pm.

Otherwise I agree with interviewing random people about topics they don't know enough about. It's dreary.

I'd also like the ratio of good to bad news to be a bit better. My local news as a child always used to end with a heartwarming story or something good. Is there really nothing good going on in the country to fill a 3 minute slot?

Taswama · 08/09/2020 20:31

Yanbu. I especially hate news that is telling us about an announcement that will be made later that day. Just tell us about the announcement when its been made fgs!
Can we also go back to shops being closed on Sundays please?

hopeishere · 08/09/2020 20:38

The Victoria Derbyshire programme is the worst. Puff and padding. BBC also do this thing where they look at their iPad and say what are the most popular stories on the BBC website. Confused How is that journalism??

waltzingparrot · 08/09/2020 20:51

I thought maybe if there was less time for breaking news stories, it might just qwell the SM frenzy a bit, but does the TV news feed the internet or vice versa.

The worst for me is bloody Kay Burley with her 'don't go away, we'll bring you the latest death toll after this ad break'

PercyKirke · 08/09/2020 21:25

Yes. All those tiresome "experts" who can only speculate. Ditto vox pops from people who know no more than I do.

nosswith · 08/09/2020 21:27

I'd prefer to have a day without political interviews. I am sure Andrew Marr and Sophy Ridge could find gainful employment on other days of the week.

Oxyiz · 08/09/2020 21:30

Yes please to shops closed on Sunday!

NeedWineNow · 08/09/2020 22:16

Yes. DH and I were saying the other day that if all this had happened 30 or 40 years ago when we were younger (ahem), without rolling 24 hour hysterical reporting and no SM we doubted there would be all this fear, doom-laden 'reporting' and scaremongering whipping everyone up into a state of panic.

ShamPayne · 08/09/2020 22:21

I only watch the news every 2 or 3 days now.

Floralnomad · 08/09/2020 22:26

No , the only time I watch the news is after midnight , the rest of the time I just use online sites . I’m not sure I know anyone who watches the nightly news anymore .

purrswhileheeats · 08/09/2020 22:33

Ha, my elderly parents still religiously tune in at 6pm and 10pm to watch the news. Drives me mad but maybe they've got the right idea?
