We live very close to a canal. Someone has decided to take up residence in our garden.

Be careful if you start feeding it, they aren’t stupid and will come back for easy food. And bring their mates,

My friend started feeding two who were visiting her garden. She now has about fifty that turn up twice a day for feeding. In three years.

Honestly they come right up to thr patio doors. It’s quite intimidating when you’re standing on the decking (I’m always up first ) and they all start walking towards you. I feed them quick smart.

They then fuck off when done and come back again for their dinner or breakfast.

we had three ducks a few years ago, Nigel 1, Nigel 2 and Marrianne we always fed and watered them. Didn't get close enough to stroke but Nigel 1 would come up the garden when called. Now we just have pigeons one is called 'Hoover' as he sucks up peanuts like a hoover Grin

My parent's house faces a little woodland with a dyke. Every year they would have visits from daisy, Donald and drake. Sometimes a 3rd male (Donald 2, I'm not very imaginative) would appear as well. Daisy was 1 very lucky girl. My parents would leave out some water and bird feed for them.

Our local Morrison's also have ducks visit every year and drink out of the dog water bowl.

Also, my work is an old building on a nature reserve. Every year the courtyard gets ducks nesting and baby ducklings born. We're all working at home this year but staff on site are keeping us all updated with the ducklings progress. Think there is 7 this year.

Oh bluntness that really made me laugh.
Isn’t it funny how some small act of kindness or benign interference with wildlife so often ends with unwanted attention and you only have yourself to blame.
Like ‘rescuing’ seemingly abandoned chick or fallen bird only to be viciously attacked by the parent whose been watching and protecting it all the while.
Birds are awful for flocking and running at you when being fed !!

I find myself sneaking to the loo, because should the ducks spot us moving past the living room window they are at the front door in seconds shouting loudly.

sisters creeping around your own house GrinGrin only laughing as I’ve had to do similar to avoid farm/ wild cats who I once made the mistake of giving some small scrap to every now and then. We achieved a balance in the end but I used to dread them both sitting on my windowsills as soon as they knew I was up, yelling and pawing. I used to avoid putting the light on and was known to make early coffee using my iPhone torch !!!

@Stompythedinosaur

They look lovely!

Any sign of them being injured or having difficulty getting in the air?

It's one duck. The same duck in both pictures. They are mobile, you know...

I was being sensitive around the duck's preferred gender identity. They had not told me their pronouns.

Hows it going today @Potionqueen ? Has your visitor ducked off?

Potionqueen · 09/09/2020 11:19

Mr duckie slept well, had corn for his breakfast and has flown off without paying his b&b bill! He has left plenty of deposits though.......

If they've been well fed, they may be back.....

Still unsure from pics whether you had a male or female, you can kind of guess from the line that runs across the eye. It's a bit thicker on a male than a female. I'm leaning towards Mrs Duck as most have finished the moult at this point.

Time to get a bigger pond, you have been chosen.....😂😂

Potionqueen · 09/09/2020 11:32

@SistersOfPercy might just leave the lid of the hot tub off and lower the temp!!!!

Oh they’d love that. Warm bums and everything. Just looked out of my window to this....

Once they have you in their little webbed clutches you are a duck slave for life 😂

Do you have a lake in your garden, Percy? Envy

I do. Well, Classed as a pond but it’s about 130ft so bigger than a normal pond.
Thisismytimetoshine · 09/09/2020 18:09

It's fabulous! No wonder the ducks think they've come home Grin

He might be back yet! My ducks knock on the back door if they think I'm late to feed them.
