Are Nintendo switches worth it?

Ds will be 10 at Christmas and really wants a Nintendo switch. Can’t believe how expensive they are!! Are they really worth it? We are a WiFi free house as well so does that mean my ds won’t be able to do loads of stuff that it’s meant to be able to do?

@TakemedowntoPotatoCity Animal Crossing is amazing and we've spent about 200 hours on it! Your cheapest option is a handheld Switch £200 + Animal Crossing game £40.

My son actually prefers to play handheld on the full sized switch rather than tv, so TBH that is a suitable option unless you want multiplayer?

GhostTypeEevee · 08/09/2020 16:27

My son loves his but then he's also a huge Pokémon fan. I'm not sure how well it would be without WiFi as it won't be able to update however.

BESTACBITCHES · 08/09/2020 17:14

There's a few games that won't work on the lite like ring fit.

Ours has been worth every penny and I bought myself a lite just for my own island on animal crossing and I've made some brilliant friends from here who also payed animal crossing, I speak to them every day and I think lockdown would have been a bit a lot harder without them to play and talk to.

Oh I was going to give in and get this for DC1.

If not a switch, would you recommend an x box or play Station?

scissy · 08/09/2020 17:31

Depends what games you want tbh. Some are exclusive to a particular console. Our house is PlayStation/Nintendo - the Switch here is a family one although DD has the animal crossing island.

For those complaining about expensive games, there are quite a few cheaper indie games available now for the Switch, but they are more in the "puzzle" genre so probably appeal more to adults than 10 yr olds! Grin

Todaywewilldobetter · 08/09/2020 17:35

We LOVE ours. No problems, controllers are fine. It's a superb family console.

Bunnymumy · 08/09/2020 17:40

@alongcameacat

Xbox and ps4 are an either or choice tbh. Both solid games consoles. Some games are exclusive to one or the other but mostly theres a lot of gaming overlap.

I use xbox and gamepass+gold (which gives you lots of free games to download for...I think 10 quid per monthish? And discounts on other games ect). But ps4 probably has a similar thing.

Cant go wrong either way. Not sure I would get one for a kid though. Probably not till they were teens.

Saffzy · 08/09/2020 17:41

I’ve got a switch lite to play animal crossing and mario kart. Not bothered about connecting to tv or playing with other people in person (you can play against others online if you get online subscription anyway) so the lite was the best option for me, I love it and have definitely got my money’s worth during lockdown.

Fatted · 08/09/2020 17:52

I'd say it all depends on what games he wants to play. If it's Fortnite or anything like that, the Playstation or Xbox is probably better.

My DC have a switch each. I do think they have been worth the money for us. My DC play theirs a lot. They like minecraft, Mario and pokemon games and of course animal crossing. I also play animal crossing. DS1 got his for his birthday last year and we got DS2 one for his birthday this year because of how much they enjoy playing on it.

IMO, the switch is better value for money if you have more than one DC. It plugs into the telly, can be played multi player and used handheld. The lite is only handheld.

homemadecommunistrussia · 08/09/2020 18:05

dd absolutely loves hers and plays hours and hours of animal crossing. We did have to replace the controllers though.
Have you considered buying pre owned from somewhere like cex?

katie43210 · 08/09/2020 18:13

I bought my niece one at Christmas, it was hardly used then lockdown hit and now she loves it. Like a pp said only disadvantage is not being able to download games without WiFi.

katie43210 · 08/09/2020 18:14

And yes to looking at cex, they only take stuff that's in good condition generally, sometimes with a box and you can save loads

16more · 08/09/2020 18:52

He did save up and buy himself an old Nintendo (3ds)?! I’ve no idea, from cex which is great so am definitely open to that, but it would probs be from Father Christmas as he still believes. So would have to be pristine

Actually scrap that. It can just be birthday present from me

Both mine want one. Would we be able to get away with just one between the 2, or would they just constantly argue with each other?

Maybe should look into the Xbox a bit more Confused

FranklyDearIDontRiverdance · 08/09/2020 19:01

We’ve had one since they came out and it’s been played with every single day. My DS (9) loves it and has done since day one.

It’s been brilliant value for money

Aisforharlot · 08/09/2020 19:02

Ds 6 adores his. We have Mario odyssey, a couple of other Mario games and he goes on about them constantly! Don't really need wifi.

Smellybluecheese · 08/09/2020 20:03

DD 5 nearly 6 loves ours. She really loves animal crossing and also plays a lot. It’s a great family console for younger children.

LBOCS2 · 08/09/2020 20:11

We have a switch, which is used a lot by our 7yo, and also by me (35) and DH (36) 😁

Additionally DSS (13) has a switch lite which gets a lot of use, and my SIL who is also in her 30s, enjoys hers.

Pretty much everyone I've listed apart from the 7yo is, or was, a relatively committed gamer who has (had) multiple consoles.

They fill a space closer to the wii than an Xbox but it doesn't mean it's a bad console. It does different things. Get Splatoon 😁

Dowser · 08/09/2020 20:15

My two grandsons love theirs
My granddaughter is holding out for one for her birthday

Pamelaaaaa · 08/09/2020 20:20

We've got a switch and switch lite on this house and they are definitely worth the money for us. We play Mario kart, luigi's mansion etc a a family plus we all separately play animal crossing.

The switch is handy in that it can be used on the tv but it's also portable. The switch lite feels more comfortable to me for handheld play though so if you only want it for handheld get a lite.
