What to do in St Ives?

We’ve got a week in St Ives booked in a few weeks, no DC and also no car. Any suggestions for things to do, restaurants etc?

Got the Tate on the list and are keen to do some walking if anyone knows good routes.

Thanks! Smile

you can't avoid the seagulls Grin
but you must avoid eating outdoors or seagulls will get you.

luckily lots of lovely cafe recommended on this thread.

I was cutting costs - "we'll just get a takeaway pastie for lunch and eat it on beach/pier" I thought. Never again. 5 years on and DD is still terrified of seagulls. We live on coast too but they just arent vicious here. St Ives are a special breed I think.

I echo the warnings about the seagulls. The St Ives ones are legendary for their thieving and aggressiveness. I was walking along the harbourside once eating an ice cream. A seagull swooped down from behind and snatched the ball of ice cream leaving me with just the cornet. While I was recovering from the shock of this another one swooped from behind and snatched the cornet!

No need to go far for a nice coastal walk. Just beyond the Tate Gallery you can join the coastal path for a lovely walk, and you may see seals from there if you're lucky.

God, how could I have forgotten about the seagulls? I still have a scar on my forefinger from the time I was sitting with my toddler on my lap on Porthgwidden beach and thought I could risk giving him a tiny triangle of sandwich if he ate it quickly -- when a gull plummeted down, I threw up my hand to protect DS's head, and his beak got me. Quite a deep cut, actually!

This sounds horrendous! What about the outside seating area of a cafe?! How do they even run? The one by the beach?

Is there anything else I need to book ahead of time?
