What's the worst/most expensive thing you've lost?

(lighthearted)

I had to leave a foreign country in a bit of a hurry because of Covid and left various bulky things behind. Landlord couldn't point blank refused to store and the insurance company have just sent me a pretty final nope re replacement.

I know how much worse it could have been. I brought the necklace I inherited from my grandmother back in my handbag, which I would have been gutted to lose. And I have my health and am stable financially. But I am feeling a bit sad for my nice clothes and my pretty fairy-lights. Would you cheer me up with some stories of the terrible things you've lost or destroyed?

A Tiffany bracelet I bought at the Tiffany shop on 5th Avenue in New York. Saved so hard for ages to buy it. I was a single mum and finally after getting out of an awful relationship where we never went anywhere or did anything, I’d finally managed to get out and booked a bargain trip to NY with a mate, literally saved for 2 years to buy this bracelet as a treat to myself and lost it last year. God knows where but I was (still am) absolutely gutted and can’t believe I was so careless. Hoping one day it’ll just turn up :(

gubbbbbddaaaa · 07/09/2020 19:41

I didn't , I asked if he had empathy ..

dementedma · 07/09/2020 19:45

Not sentimental value but pissed off to lose a pair of bifocals at the beach this weekend! Grrrrr

nunnun · 07/09/2020 19:46

My virginity to a Butlins' waiter.

bananamonkey · 07/09/2020 19:49

These things are so gutting! The sapphire fell out of my engagement ring, looked down when I parked up somewhere and noticed the big gaping hole! I got it replaced but it’s an antique ring and not the same.

Similar to the shoe one above, not much in the grand scheme of things but I got toddler DC1 some baby bogs (stupid expensive welly things) and she lost one after about a week. Losing one shoe is more annoying than two as you’re left with one which make you angry every time you look at it until you finally throw it away which also makes you angry as it’s such a waste.

@Doliv63

After a three day trip out to the barrier reef I dropped my camera in the sea when we arrived back at airlie beach ...all Oz pics lost !
Oh no. That's awful. Back in the days of film for cameras DH and I had been on holiday abroad. Picked up by the coach and suddenly realised I'd left all the film I'd used in the fridge. Luckily the coach waited while I legged it back up to the eight floor to retrieve them!!

A diamond bracelet from Tiffany's - a present from my boss and by far the most expensive piece of jewellery I've ever owned. No idea what happened to it, it just fell off my wrist one day. It wasn't insured either Sad
Your boss? Blimey... tell me more!
alphasox · 07/09/2020 20:10

My one of a kind artist designed and hand made wedding ring. I was sea swimming in Dorset and it was cold so I guess my fingers shrivelled a bit and it came off. I still feel so upset 7 years later. My new ring is nowhere near as special.

TheoriginalLEM · 07/09/2020 20:13

Diamond ring £1700 devastated

Anthilda · 07/09/2020 20:17

I've never lost anything expensive because I dont own or buy things which are expensive.
Sentimental on the other hand, loads of stuff Sad

CherryPavlova · 07/09/2020 20:17

My engagement ring about a week after my husband proposed.

AuditAngel · 07/09/2020 20:34

DH left his ebook in the seat pocket on a plane on the way on holiday, he had travelled out later than me and the kids.

Then while away with his brothers, one of them hid his ebook (according to DH), we collected next time we were away (family property)

About 3 years later, he did the same thing again, left one in the seat pocket. Told me he wouldn’t replace it, would just use the kindle app on his iPad in future. I pointed out he’d just leave that in the seat pocket instead and I’d rather replace an ebook at £120!

A silver cat charm bracelet, each small link was a tiny cat, plus one cat shaped charm. It belonged to my great grandma and was the only piece of jewellery she gave me. I lost it, as a teen, at an anniversary party in the 90s and was devastated.

Scarby9 · 07/09/2020 20:39

Left a camera on a bus in Germany, threw out an envelope containing £200 in Icelandic kroner on the way to the airport, lost a pair of inherited monogrammed gold earrings I don't know where.
I don't have a very good track record.

DinosApple · 07/09/2020 20:40

Oh and two weeks ago I lost a silver daisy earring. It was my favourite pair too. Taking a flipping mask on and off on holiday in Shropshire.

strawberrysalsa · 07/09/2020 20:50

Lost a 10 shilling note.... totally giving away my age.

I'd been sent to the corner shop as a child and lost the money. It was my mum's housekeeping and practically everyone on the street came out to look for it. Still get reminding about how careless I was by my mum!

athousandstrawberrylollys · 07/09/2020 21:05

Oh my some of these are heartbreaking! Thank you all for putting things in perspective - and to @nunnun for making me scream out loud with laughter.

I recently left a tenner in a cash machine due to worrying about my dying dad and getting distracted and someone took it. That's the worst because I'm fanatical about looking after things precious to me. The mere thought of some scabby thieving piece of shit taking anything of mine fills me with dread and anger. Most my electronics have tracking on them (kindles, iPad and phones and even laptops have remote disabling.) and I have CCTV on the house. Actually losing anything is not likely because I'm a bit obsessive about checking I have my stuff with me a lot. I don't have a lot and other than my iPhone and the iPad, nothing I own is really worth much so I'm overprotective.

sparkli · 07/09/2020 21:51

A beautiful, chunky silver bracelet DH bought me for my 30th, the day after I gave birth to our 6th and final DC. It wasn't hugely expensive, but he chose it himself and presented me with it in the NICU. It had such sentimental value. I've no idea where I lost it, around 10 years later. I keep hoping it might just turn up.

ShesMadeATwatOfMePam · 07/09/2020 21:59

Losing the jewellery is awful but on flip side, jewellery is supposed to be worn and enjoyed. If all the jewellery that's been lost in this thread had been kept safe at home in a box you wouldn't have got to enjoy it at all.

TheoneandObi · 07/09/2020 22:04

My entire haul of Christmas shopping - perfume and earrings for DD, books and nick knacks fir DS and other small items. Was sure I'd left them in a certain shop. When I went back to ask they denied all knowledge.

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 07/09/2020 22:05

I used to have a penknife which belonged to my grandad.
It was decorated with the Olympic rings and the words "Berlin 1936".
I think he stole it from a corpse in the Italian campaign in WW2.
It went mad missing in a house move. Absolutely gutted.

Aunty5ocial · 07/09/2020 22:27

A Cartier watch. It was a 21st birthday present and I was a pisshead

Connelloni · 07/09/2020 22:49

Left my work laptop on a train one evening. Had terrible fear all weekend and then some wonderful soul handed it in on the Monday.

Put €200 euro in the bin once pre holiday (thankfully realised while packing and retrieved it in time)

Lost a bracelet and a ring both with huge sentimental rather than monetary value.

It’s such a horrible feeling!

CakeandCoffeeQueen · 07/09/2020 22:52

A ruby earring I was given when I graduated, i’m still gutted.
