A North Face jacket - is it worth the cost?

They are so expensive! I want one... either talk me out of it or convince me it's okay to spend hundreds of pounds on a raincoat...

But a kids one! Pretty much the same but the logo is a bit larger (and there’s a name tag inside!). Definitely worth it.

tectonicplates · 06/09/2020 23:07

If you're looking for proper outdoor walking clothes for long distance country walking then yes. It's good quality equipment. You can often get good discounts at www.wiggle.co.uk

If you're just looking for a "normal" raincoat to wear in town, there will be other options that might suit you better.

TokyoSushi · 06/09/2020 23:08

Yes, yes, a million times yes! I have a Metropolis Parka, it was around £300 and is just about to go into its 5th winter. It brings me absolute joy every time I put it on, so much so I'm actually looking forward to it being cold enough to wear it!

Their sales are amazing so wait for one. I got one reduced from 195 euro to 90 and have had it 20 years and it's still epic!!! (I regularly check out their sales and there's always loads off)

FizzyPink · 06/09/2020 23:09

I would never have spent money like that on a coat. However, DP is a sports coach and spends all day outside so has a North Face jackets. Last winter I wore one of his while out on a walk when it was bitterly cold and I couldn’t believe how warm it kept me! Honestly it was a complete revelation.

I think I’ll buy myself one this winter and I’m usually someone who insists on freezing to death in a deeply impractical coat.

SerenityNowwwww · 06/09/2020 23:12

www.amazon.co.uk/NORTH-FACE-McMurdo-Parka-Black/dp/B07BB4TD7D/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?dchild=1&psc=1&keywords=north%2Bface%2Bchildren%2Bmcmurdo&th=1&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1599430188&sr=8-1

The prices sometimes go down on amazon and theses always sales too. If you don’t particularly want a fancy one/womans one this one is as warm at toast.

HexyAndIKnowIt · 06/09/2020 23:13

Absolutely. So so warm.
I Had mine from one of the outlets so it was much cheaper. The gloves are amazing too.

SerenityNowwwww · 06/09/2020 23:15

Oh yes my ‘paws’ have finally given up the ghost after 9 years. I got them in a sale for £35 and they really keep my hands warm (I have terrible circulation and blue hands and feel for most of the year)

Bramble88 · 06/09/2020 23:19

I have two, a rain mac and a full parka, both keep me nice and toasty! So worth the price. I used the parka whilst working in Alaska and it kept me so warm!! Defo recommend

OhioOhioOhio · 07/09/2020 04:48

I want one too.

Fungster · 07/09/2020 04:55

North Face and Columbia are absolutely worth it if the weather conditions are cold enough. I live in the Midwest USA (average January temperature -15 degrees Celsius) and we all have Columbia parkas. Worth every penny.

BlackberrySky · 07/09/2020 04:57

Ten years on and mine is still going strong. It's completely waterproof even in a total downpour and very warm. I wash it in my machine no problem. I bought it off season in a sale for £150 so that's £15 per year very well spent so far.

MooseBeTimeForSummer · 07/09/2020 05:20

I live in Northern Canada. Yes. I have a Canada Goose coat but it has to be reeeaaly cold (like -40) before I can wear it. The rest of the time I wear North Face or Arc’teryx down jackets.

TheMenstrualLoad · 07/09/2020 05:51

I have a metropolis parka that is now 13 years old - it's still going!! Totally worth the price tag for me

chillychicken · 07/09/2020 06:39

Yes, I bought my £300 one for £120 in the July sales 11 years ago and it still looks like new despite being worn daily during winter every year.

Ikeameatballs · 07/09/2020 06:44

I love mine for warmth. I got it in the sale reduced to I think £180. I love it, onto it’s 3rd year this year and it’s great.

I’ve also got a Rab waterproof jacket which is great and gets worn almost constantly. I think I’ve had it 5years now and it was £120 but cost per wear is in pennies now.

Clementine8 · 07/09/2020 07:05

Same as everyone else, bought mine 8 years ago and it’s still going strong but doesn’t look like it’s 8 years old. When other parents are standing watching outdoor sports complaining they are cold and wet i’m snug and dry.

Herewefall · 07/09/2020 07:15

Yes but be careful which one you buy - a short jacket or a lighter coat, or one that's isn't water proof - will not provide the warmth you seem to require. I bought an Arctic Parka about 10 years ago - it's not pretty but it's the warmest thing I've ever worn and when it's cold and wet outside that's all that matters.

Impatientwino · 07/09/2020 07:19

DH, DS and I all have the NF Triclimate. It's a fleece and a waterproof/windproof layer that you can wear separately or together.

Absolutely brilliant - I have never ever been cold in mine. I wear it all three ways every year. We got to a very windy and rainy part of Norfolk a fair few times every year and they are brilliant there.

We got DS his at Bicester and a much reduced price but even at full price ours have been worth every penny. My only gripe is that they don't start smaller so youngest DS will have to wait a while to have one!

Indoctro · 07/09/2020 07:33

I have had mine NF 3-1 jacket since 2005 and it's still in perfect condition

It's a great coat , I totally recommend them

AWiseWomanOnceSaidFuckThisShit · 07/09/2020 09:17

So here's my logic. I'm a little overweight, I'd like to lose around a stone but every weekend I end up plonking myself in front of Netflix and doing fuck all! So if I buy myself a £210 outdoor coat I'll obviously want to wear it, therefore I'll have even more of an incentive to get off my fat arse and go walking / hiking every weekend, right? Obviously me splashing out is for my health.

Obviously.

Juanmorebeer · 07/09/2020 10:04

I have an artic parka and I've had it for 4 winters now and it still looks new apart from a tiny bit of wear at the cuff of both sleeves.

If anything, it is too hot to wear so I have to have it unzipped
