Locked knee help

poloarpanda123 · 06/09/2020 22:14

My daughter was diagnosed with hypermobility back in December and was supposed to have been referred.
Her knee often locks in place and she gets so much pain. Usually we manage to straighten it after a while.

Tonight it locked as she was laying on her front on her bed when she was dangling it. She's in so much pain and has been for about half a hour. he can't move it at all.

I rang 111 and they told me to take her to A and E but I can't move her (she's 11 and can't even move her leg at all) I'm waiting for someone to call but what can I do?

Make sure she's had some painkillers and let them kick in. Would something warm on the knee help?

PajamasnoDramas · 06/09/2020 22:46

Can you pull at the ankle while holding the knee to unlock it? I have this, but it’s due to a torn meniscus not hypermobility. When it’s locked it feels paralysed almost but I’m able now as an adult to manoeuvre my leg so that I can unlock it independently. It’s really painful and causes a fair bit of anxiety when it occurs.

poloarpanda123 · 06/09/2020 23:13

Thanks both. I've given Ibuprofen. Pajamas, her leg is in a weird position bent outwards (she's on her front) I've tried moving it a tiny bit but it's too much for her.

They called me back and said they will send someone out but it could be 6 hours. She says it feels like it's glued (I guess like you describe Pajamas)

This happens to me - hyper mobility AND often meniscus. Had surgery on one knee, need it on the other. To unlock, I need to bend the knee right back. It can lock when I’m walking which can be embarrassing in public!

IAmFleshIAmBone · 06/09/2020 23:26

Usually helps me if I bend the knee and try to reverse whatever movement I did to make it lock. Ugh I know how painful it is. Poor thing.

poloarpanda123 · 06/09/2020 23:45

We usually manage to unlock it but tonight it 's not happening. It's never lasted this long. wlv and I amFlesh does it really hurt when you move it back? She's just wet herself too.

Call an ambulance for goodness sake

What are you pratting about on here for ?

Her kneecap could well be dislocated

PastelPompoms · 07/09/2020 00:08

I hope the ambulance comes soon op. I would call 999 and ask where it is.

Sycamoretrees · 07/09/2020 00:13

It sounds like she needs an ambulance!

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 07/09/2020 00:13

It's dislocated surely? That's an ambulance job. Can you try pushing on her kneecap or ankle left or right to try to put it back on the rails?
Mine partially dislocates and I have to push on my ankle or knee to get it to slide. I wear a weightlifting brace when it's bad to keep it in line.
(Also hypermobile)

poloarpanda123 · 07/09/2020 00:13

AnyFucker I called 111 and they're dealing with it but say it could take up to six hours as not life threatening. They're keeping me informed.

poloarpanda123 · 07/09/2020 00:14

If it's dislocated that means it's happened several times before then?

OP posts:
Sycamoretrees · 07/09/2020 00:15

I think you'd get a quicker response from dialing 999, a 12 year old in severe pain from a limb injury and can't be moved is reasonably high priority surely?

AnyFucker · 07/09/2020 00:16

Some people with hypermobility can easily sublux or dislocate their kneecap

A full dislocation is acutely painful and needs urgent relocation. Get back on the phone.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 07/09/2020 00:21

If it's dislocated that means it's happened several times before then?
Yes it could have done. Once it's gone it gets easier each time. I could pop my ex's joint back in at home. It was so loose from repeated dislocations(accident not hypermobilty). The tendons stretch each time.

naturallydelicious · 07/09/2020 00:23

This happens to me . Can she she slowly rotate her ankle clockwise x10 and then anti clockwise x 10 . This sometimes helps to unlock mine

IAmFleshIAmBone · 07/09/2020 00:32

No, it only hurts if I force it straight, if that makes sense. Oh the poor wee thing. Hope you have luck getting her seen, as others say it could be dislocated.

AnyFucker · 07/09/2020 10:04

Where are you up to today ?

CormoranStrike · 07/09/2020 10:06

Sounds like a dislocated kneecap to me - very painful and needs professional relocation

Dillydallyingthrough · 07/09/2020 10:11

Hey OP, hows your DD? This happens to me, but once I did have to call an ambulance as although it had happened before that day I couldn't move it. They gave me morphine on arrival and then tried gently to move it, that didn't work and the paramedics said you shouldn't push it too much. Taken into hospital and shifted back and then had surgery a week later as had torn my meniscus. It does get easier to do once its happened a couple of times but you do have to be very carefully when pushing it back. Hope she feels better.

PastelPompoms · 07/09/2020 17:45

How is she today op?
